“How long do we have to wait?” he asked, his arms wrapped around her waist and his chin on her shoulder. She laughed and it rolled around him like a gentle breeze, he turned his head and gently kissed her neck. She laughed again as she turned in his arms to face him, her deep brown eyes staring up curiously at him.

“What for?” she asked, pretending not to know. He rolled his eyes as he pulled her closer.

“You know very well what for,” he said, running his lips along her arms which were wrapped around his neck. She leaned against him.

“Forty-five minutes,” she said quietly.

“Hey!” she exclaimed, he blushed.

“Sorry,” he said, “I’m just anxious, we’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time.”

“Yes we have,” she agreed, “and I think we can wait another...” she glanced at her watch, ”thirty nine minutes.”

He sighed teasingly and shook his head, “Oh I GUESS.”

She laughed as she wrapped her arms tighter around his neck and laid her head against his chest. She listened to the beat of his heart and gave a forlorn sigh. She couldn’t wait to have him lean against her stomach and hear the soft beat of their baby’s heart. She wanted to lay her hands on her stomach and feel a kick. She wanted a baby. She wanted their baby. She had her neices and nephew and sure she loved them very much, but she wanted her own. And she’d waited so long, they’d been through so much together that she could barely wait any longer.

“What time is it now?” he asked, breaking the silence.

She laughed, “one minute less than the last time you asked,” she replied. He laughed too as he bent his head down and pressed his lips against her cheek, then slipped them down and explored her neck. She giggled lightly, her hands running through his short, dark hair.

“We can do this right?” she asked suddenly, her smile fading a bit. He pulled back and looked at her for a long time.

“We can do it if we stay together. Together we can do anything Phoebe,” he said seriously, “I’ve always believed that. Love can do anything, anything good at least.”

Phoebe rolled her eyes, looking to lighten the mood she switched subjects, “So if we get an ax murderer I can blame him on you?”

He laughed, “Half of him.”

“Honey,” she whispered, shaking him gently as he slept on the couch, “it’s time.” He was up in an instant, wiping his eyes and getting to his feet. They both walked slowly up the stairs and stopped outside the door leading to the bathroom. He looked down at her and she looked up at him, both feeling the same thing. A certain excitment mixed with a little fear. She took a slow deep breath and tightened her grip on his hand.

“Who’s going in?” she asked.

“Both of us,” he said firmly, “I want to be with you in case this isn’t it.”

“Oh I don’t know if I could take that. We’ve been trying so long,” she said, dread suddenly rising in her chest but he smiled gently.

“Then we’ll try again,” he assured, “there’s no rush.” She nodded and he reached for the door, opening it slowly. They both walked toward the sink. She picked up the white tester and slowly turned it over. They both stared at the small little box, their jaws hanging open in shock.

“We’re having a baby!” she erupted suddenly, flinging her arms around his neck in joy. He smiled and lifted her into his arms, her legs wrapping around his waist and her head settling on his shoulder as he twirled her gently around, laughter pouring from inside them both.

“A baby!” he exclaimed, kissing her cheeks over and over, “I love you so much!” he whispered, nibbling gently on her ear. She laughed and pulled back a little, staring into his dark eyes as she leaned in for a kiss.

“I love you too.” she said as their lips touched and a simple kind of heaven envoked her. She’d found her love, her life and her purpose as she stared into his deep brown eyes and saw the gleam of a father in them. She gave a giddy smile and laid her head against his shoulder again, smiling as a thought hit her.

“And you thought that was a long wait,” she teased, “we have to wait another nine months for the baby to get here!”

He laughed and nodded, “I can wait though,” he smiled, “with you.”
