The forecast in the Bay Area for the weekend was not good. Heavy rains and high winds were expected by late Saturday. It was Friday afternoon, and Phoebe had just finished her last class for the day and was walking through the campus on her way to her bike. It was then that the rain started to spit. Great, she thought, its starting early. I guess our ‘sister weekend’ just moved indoors. As much as Phoebe loved her sisters, she still wanted to get outside to be able to get some space to herself this weekend. Maybe a good game of Truth or Dare is in order, we haven’t done that for awhile. As Phoebe was thinking of various things to do to her sister a voice broke though her thoughts.
“Hey Phoebe.”
“Hey there Kevin.” She replied
“So you got plans this weekend?” he asked hopefully
“Yeah, my sisters and I have a ‘Sister Weekend ‘planned. Why?”
“Oh the gang is heading up to Donna’s parents place in the Napa. I was wondering if you wanted to join us. We just decided to go. Sort of a last minute thing you know.”
“Oh I would love to, but…”
“The sister thing, I understand.” He replied a little disappointed.
“Yeah sorry. Maybe next time?”
“For sure. Well have a good weekend and see you in Psych. on Monday.
“Yeah you to. Say hi to everyone for me.”
As Phoebe continued to walk to her bike she quietly kicked herself. What was I thinking? I just turned down a weekend with the gang, let alone Kevin, for time with my sisters. HELLOOOO, Phoebe are you nuts?
All the way home Phoebe was thinking of her missed opportunity. She liked Kevin smart, funny, not to mention a major hottie. The gang would have so much fun. Six college students that just seemed to have clicked from day one. They shared almost everything: classes study groups, interests, and of course hanging out at the hottest nightclub in San Francisco…P3. Phoebe liked it, as it gave her some peace away from all the demon hunting. Oh well, she thought, there is always next time.
As Phoebe arrived home she was starting to get wet from the rain, that was starting to come down harder. Augh, she thought, you couldn’t have waited till I got home could you? No, you had to get me almost drenched before I made it. Well it could have been worse, she thought, it could have poured all the way. As she walked in the Manor she dumped her wet pack and jacket in the front foyer.
“Piper, Prue. I’m home”
“Hey Pheebs, how was school?” Prue replied from the living room.
“Not bad. Where’s Piper?”
“Right here.” Piper answered, as she walked into the living room carrying a tray with three mugs of hot chocolate. “I thought you might need this to warm you up a little after the ride in the rain.”
“Oh Thanx sis. You are the best.” Replied Phoebe.
“Nice timing on the ride home by the way. A few minutes later and you would have been drenched, and our ‘sister weekend’ would have been us taking care of you and your cold.” Prue remarked with a smile.
Prue loved her sisters very much and hated it when they got sick. Feeling that there could have been something that she could have done to prevent it. It always brought out her motherly instincts.
“Yeah well you know me, I’m ‘Charmed’” replied Phoebe with a smirk. “With that I’m going up to grab a hot shower, and change into something dryer.”
There was something in her tone and the way that Phoebe was heading towards the stairs that Piper picked up on. Something was bothering her baby sister, and she intended to find out.
“Is something wrong Pheebs?” She asked her sister as she stepped in front of her, preventing her from heading up the stairs.
“No, why?” Phoebe replied. Knowing full well she would have to give into Piper sooner or later. She never could keep anything from Piper or Prue for that matter. They both had this 6th sense of knowing when Phoebe had a problem.
“You just seem a little down that’s all.”
“It’s nothing really. I ran into Kevin after classes and he said that the Gang were all heading up to Donna’ parents place in the Napa. They just decided to go, one of those spur of the moments things. Anyway, Kevin asked if I wanted to go.”
“Kevin, as in Psych. Kevin?” Prue asked curiously. Both sisters knew that Phoebe liked Kevin.
“Yep that one.”
“So why the long face? I thought you liked Kevin?” Piper inquired.
“Oh I do. Its just that we’ve had this weekend planned for weeks now and you two even took the time off work.”
Piper put an arm around Phoebes shoulders. “Phoebe, there will be other ‘sister weekends’. I mean when can’t we, we live under the same roof.”
Prue got up and joined her sisters. “Yeah Pheebs, go, we can do this another time.”
“Thanx guys but they are probably half way there by now. They were all going up in Jim’s van right after school. Look its ok. I’m sure there will be other chances. Now can I go get a hot shower and some dry clothes, before I catch ammonia and you two have to play doctors all weekend” She said with a laugh. Piper and Prue looked at each other and both turned to their baby sister and smacked her bottom telling her to get upstairs immediately. All three laughing, Phoebe headed upstairs to get warmed up
After her shower and getting into some dry cloths, Phoebe felt a lot better. She did however get the feeling that she may have picked up the start of a cold or something. I won’t say anything to them, she thought; they’ll just worry, as she went bouncing down the stairs. "Ok, who’s up for a good game of Truth or Dare? Lets this sister thing get started.” She announced with a sly smile. When she came into the living room she stopped suddenly. There was her duffel bag stuffed and a set of keys sitting on the top of it.
“What’s going on guys?”
“Well we decided that you are going to the Napa Valley for the weekend.” Replied Prue in her ’not going to take no for and answer tone.’
“But…”
“No buts, “said Piper, “you’re going and that’s final.” As she grabbed the bag and handed it to Phoebe, along with the keys to Prues’ Miata.
“Yeah, now get out of her before I change my mind on letting you use my car. Just drive safe, call when you get there and pick us up a few bottles of wine.”
As Phoebe took the bag and keys from Piper she turned to leave then stopped herself. She dropped the bag and turned slowly, she ran back to her sister and pulled them into a three-way hug. “Have I told you two how much I love you lately?”
“No, but you can give us all the details when you get back. That’s all we ask.” Piper said as she hugged her baby sister goodbye.
Phoebe broke away from the hug and picked up her bag, and headed out the door for the Napa Valley. As the door closed behind her she said a quite I love you.
“Love you too Pheebs.” her sisters replied from the other side of the closed door. None of them realizing those could be the last unspoken words.
It was about a two-hour drive to Donna’s Parents cabin, lots of time Phoebe thought, for me to come up with a way to repay my sisters. She couldn’t help but think how lucky she was to have them has her big sisters. Always there for her when she need a hand. Even when she didn’t think she did. They always knew when they had to step in, and when to let me work things out on my own. I guess this was one of those step in times. With this her thoughts turned to the fun they wold all have up at the cabin. This could be the best weekend ever. She decided to call them to let them know she was coming up after all.
After a few rings the phone was answered. ”Hello Napa Valley Party central how may we serve you?” “Kevin?”
“Phoebe? Where are you this is a terrible connection?”
“Actually I’m about an hour away.”
“What? I thought you had the sister thing going on this weekend?”
“ I did, until I told them about this and they practically throw me out of the manor. They even packed my bag”
“Well hey that’s great. I’ll let everyone know that you’re coming. Now we can have a real party. The Gangs all gonna be here.”
“Yeah. So see you in about an hour. Save me some of that wine will you?”
“Will do, drive safe its getting pretty nasty out there”
“ I will see you soon” And they both hung up the phone.
“Hey everyone, you’ll never guess whose on her way here right now?”
“Not Phoebe?” Donna replied
“Yep the one and only.” Kevin answered with a bit of excitement.
They all know that Kevin was disappointed that Phoebe had originally turned down his invitation to go. He was planning on asking her out before the weekend was over. Now they could all see the change in is attitude.
“Hey that’s great” Jim commented. “Phoebe always fun at parties, it just wouldn’t be the same if we weren’t all here”
“That probably has something to do with the fact she is part owner of the hottest night club in the city,” Colin said
“Yeah that could be part of it” remarked Kevin. They all laughed, knowing that for Kevin that had NOTHING to do with it.
“Anyway she said she’d be here in about an hour and we are to save her some wine.”
Phoebe had driven that road what seemed like a thousand times. Her and Donna had been friends since high school, and Phoebe had spent many a weekend and summer vacation at the cottage with Donna. So she wasn’t to concerned that it was now dark, she knew where she was going. The only thing that bothered her a bit was the rain, it was really coming down and the wind was practically blowing it sideways. It was a sheet of water pouring from the sky. And to top it all off she knew that she was getting sick. She could feel the weariness start to creep up on her.
‘Oh why didn’t I just tell Piper and Prue that I was starting to get sick? Then I could be tucked in bed right now with Piper bringing me her delicious Chicken soup. No I had to go out and be with Kevin. Oh well, I’ll see how I feel tomorrow and maybe Kevin can drive me back home. I don’t wanna put a damper on everyone else’s weekend.’ As these thoughts played through Phoebes head she came around a corner only to meet the headlights of an oncoming truck. She swerved to avoid the collision and drove straight into the ditch and roadside bushes. The impact causing her to be thrown forward and banging her head on the steering wheel. Knock her unconscious and leaning on the horn.
The truck stopped as soon as possible and the driver jumped out and ran to Phoebe’s car. At the same time another car came around the corner and also spotted the accident. Both the other car and the truck driver arrived at the car at the same time.
“I’m a doctor” they other driver said. “ What happened?”
“I’m not sure.” Answered the truck driver. “We both came around the corner and then she suddenly turned into the ditch. Maybe with this crazy storm she thought that we were gonna run into each other”
They opened the door to Phoebes car and found her slumped over the steering wheel. Gently pulling her back to the seat they could see the large cut on her forehead. The Dr. felt for a pulse immediately.
“Is she….” The trucker asked the unfinished question. Afraid of the answer if he finished it. He looked down at her, she reminded him of his own daughter. About the same age, and probably just as full of life. Someone with there whole life ahead of them.
“No, I got a pulse. It’s not very strong, but I think she’ll be ok” Replied the Dr.
“Oh thank God” Was all the trucker could say. “I’ll go to my truck and call for an ambulance.”
“No it’ll take to long. I’ll take her in, in my car, it will be quicker, and I can call a tow truck to pick-up her car while I’m there.”
“Are you sure?” the trucker asked a bit skeptical
“Yeah, it’ll be no problem.”
“Ok, here’s my home number call me and let me know how she is”
“Can do.” The Dr. said as he took the business card from the trucker.
They shook hands and the trucker continued his way home. To the family he loved and loved him. I think I’ll take Nat out for dinner tomorrow just the two of us he thought.
The Dr. carefully placed Phoebe in his car. Buckling the safety belt around her, and getting in the other side of the car, he drove off. Leaving behind Phoebes purse, cell phone and the bag her sisters had so carefully packed for her.
After two hours the gang was starting to get worried.
“Maybe she pulled off somewhere to wait out the storm” Jim remarked
“No something’s wrong, she would have called.” Kevin said with worry in his voice.
“Maybe we should call her sisters. Maybe she decided to head back to town. And her cell won’t work due to the weather” Donna suggested
“Yeah that possible. Happens to me all the time with my phone on days like this”. Colin said
“Ok I’ll call her sisters.” Donna said as she headed to the Phone
After a few rings Donna got the answering machine. Probable at P3 she thought. She left a message and then tried P3. Again after a few rings someone answered the phone.
“Are Piper or Prue Halliwell there?” She asked.
“Yeah one second” Replied the bartender
“Hello this is Piper.”
“Piper, its Donna.”
“Donna, hey. You know that Phoebes on her way there right?”
“Yeah that’s why I’m calling, she called about two hours ago and she still hasn’t showed up. It shouldn’t have taken her that long to get here. We were wondering if maybe she headed back to town due to the weather.”
Piper was starting to get a worried look on her face and Prue spotted it from across the club, and started to make her way over to where Piper was standing.
“Have you tried the house yet?” Piper replied
“Yeah but there was no answer, I’m starting to get worried Piper. I mean I know Phoebe knows the road and all but this rain and wind…”She never finished her sentence
“Ok Donna. I’ll send Prue home to watch for her there and as soon as she gets in we’ll call you there ok? Don’t worry Phoebe is a very resourceful girl.” Piper said trying to calm Donna down if not herself. The whole time having Prue looking at her with concern written all over her face.
“Ok Piper. If she shows up her I’ll call you.”
“Ok, Thanx for calling Donna”
“No problem”
As Piper hung up the phone Prue was just staring at her, waiting for her to say something. She knew something had happened to Phoebe. She could tell by the tone in Pipers voice when she was talking to Donna, let alone the look on her face now.
She couldn’t wait any more. “Its Phoebe isn’t it? What happened”
“I don’t know. Apparently she hasn’t shown up at the cabin yet”
“What do you mean hasn’t shown up? She left her like three hours ago. She should be there by now.” Prue said with worry. I should have never let her go out in this weather.
Piper knew that her big sister was starting to beat herself up over letting Phoebe go. “Prue it’s not your fault. We both encouraged her to go up there.” For all we know she could be heading back here right now,” Piper said soothing Prue and herself.
“Ok so take a cab and head home and wait there. If she shows up I’ll call you here. If she shows up here in the mean time call me on my cell. Agreed?” Prue said
“Ok, I’ll try and get out of here early.”
As they hugged and Prue left they both knew it was gonna be a long night.
It was the longest ride home for Prue in here life. She silently prayed that when she got there Phoebe would be home laying on the couch eating her favorite snack. As the cab approached the Manor Prue knew that would not be the case as her car was not in the driveway. Maybe she had car trouble and caught a ride home. Piper was right Phoebe was very resourceful when she had to be. Always one to get herself into a serious jam and be able to come out of it as if nothing happened.
Prue paid the cab driver and ran up the steps to the manor. Trying the door, it was still locked. Fumbling with her keys she quickly unlocked the door. “Phoebe?” Nothing. She made her way through the house calling after her baby sister. Still no reply, she headed up stairs to Phoebes room. Quickly opening her sister’s door she let out a frustrated sigh. No, Phoebe. Where could she be? Prue thought. She made her way downstairs to make a cup of tea and to start the wait that would hopefully bring her baby sister home safe and sound.
Mean time at P3, Piper wasn’t doing any better. Worrying about Phoebe was one thing, but she also knew that Prue was beating herself up. There was nothing either one of them could have done. They had both packed Phoebes bag. And they had both come up with the plan at the same time once Pheebs went into the shower that night. As she recalled the conversation. She had been shocked when Prue had offered that Phoebe take her car. Better on gas she said. Yeah right, Piper thought. She knew how much it would mean to Phoebe to let her know that she trusted her with her precious baby for the whole weekend.
With her thoughts on her baby sister she saw a familiar blue light in the hallway that was coming out of her office. She knew it was Leo and prayed with all her heart that Phoebe’s disappearance was not supernatural related. Afterall Phoebe was the one that could see the future. Without that how the heck were they supposed to find her? As Leo approached her Piper could feel that she was beginning to lose control. She grabbed onto Leo and started a quite sob into his Chest. Leo was a bit taken back by his girlfriend’s reaction, but also knew that she would tell him when she was ready. After a few minutes Piper composed herself.
“Please tell me that you are not here because of “they” sent you.” She finally got out
“No, just came to see my favorite girl. Why what’s wrong?” He asked softly, still hugging Piper.
“Phoebe was supposed to be heading up to the Napa Valley to meet some friends. That was over four hours ago. She hasn’t shown up yet and Prue called from the Manor and she hasn’t shown up there either. I’m really worried Leo. That’s not like her at all. With all the demon stuff lately, she would have called.”
“Do you want me to go check with my bosses?”
“Could you. At least that could possibly shed some light on this.”
“Sure, I’ll be right back.” He gave her a quick kiss and then headed towards Pipers office and orbed out of P3.
About 20minutes Leo was back. He spotted Piper at the bar and came over and gave her a quick kiss, startling her. As she turned around she saw Leo standing there with a solemn look on his face.
“Please tell me that this is not related to demons, warlocks or any other bad creature that stirs in this crazy world.” She pleaded to him
“That part I am happy to tell you is not the reason.”
“But….” Piper asked
“Well because it’s not demon related “they” can’t help. We’ll just have to find her the old fashioned way, and call Darryl.” Leo answered.
Piper was relieved to a point. At least its not related to anything supernatural. But that still does not get us any closer to find her she thought. Leo noticed how tired Piper looked.
“Look why don’t you go home and be with Prue and wait there. I’ll close up here.” Leo suggested.
“Are you sure?” Piper asked.
“Yeah now get outta here go home and I’ll come by as soon as I lock up.”
Piper grabbed her coat and keys, gave Leo a kiss good bye and left for the Manor.
On her way home her thoughts turned to Phoebe. All not good. I have to stop thinking like this. She’ll be fine; she’s strong and resourceful. As she pulled in the driveway she knew that Phoebe had still not made an appearance. Prue’s car was nowhere to be seen. She made her way up the stairs and in to the Manor. Hanging up her coat she spotted Prue on the couch. Both giving the unspoken words that they had used so many times before. Both knowing that Phoebe was still missing. Piper went over to Prue and they both just held each other, neither one not wanting to let go, finding comfort in the others strength, as the tears ran down both of their faces. Finally after a few minutes, Piper backed off knowing that she had to tell Prue what Leo had found out.
“What are you doing home so early?” Prue asked
“Leo came by to say hi and I told him what happened. He sent me home and he’s coming by after he closes the club.”
“You got a good guy their Pip.”
“Yeah I know. He did find out one thing for us though.”
“Good or bad?”
“A bit of both. Pheebs disappearing act is not supernatural related.”
“Well that’s the good news I’m assuming what’s the bad?”
“Well because it’s not demon related “they” can’t help. We’ll have to do this the old fashion way. Wait for a bit and call Darryl. Not necessarily in that order.”
“Ok I’ll call Darryl now cause I know that waiting is gonna kill me.”
Prue called Darryl as Piper sat on the couch waiting. She too could not stand the waiting. The unknown. It was worse then anything she’d experienced. Knowing that her baby sister was out there somewhere, possibly hurt, or worse....dead. Prue came back and explained that Darryl would see what he could do. Normally you had to wait 24hrs to file a missing person report, but Darryl said he’d look into it personally. She sat on the couch and wrapped her arm around Piper.
“She’ll be ok Pip. You’ll see.” Prue knew that she had to be the strong one. Even though it was killing her inside as well.
“ We don’t know that Prue. She could be hurt somewhere, or worse what if she’s...”
“Don’t even say it Piper. She’s not. We’ll find her.”
And so they sat one sister consoling the other, and visa versa. Just waiting for news on their baby girl. By about 4AM they had both finally fell asleep. From fits of crying and sheer worry. Leo orbed in and found them both on the couch still hugging each other. He quietly placed a blanket over the two of them and waited. He couldn’t believe this was happening himself. Phoebe was like a little sister to him. He didn’t know how the sisters would cope if anything happened to her.
At 6AM the doorbell went, waking both Piper and Prue. Leo approached the door and opened it. With the girls waiting on the couch hoping that it was Phoebe....
“Hi Darryl.”
“Hi Leo. How are they holding up?”
“ Not good.”
“Any news?”
“Some but its not good. Can I come in?”
“Oh yeah sure, sorry.”
Darryl walked into the living room and saw that both Piper and Prue had not got much sleep and had been crying most of the night. Prue looked at him and knew that any news he had was not good. Oh God just let her be alive, she thought.
“Tell me you found her Darryl.” Piper asked
Darryl looked at Leo, then from Piper to Prue. “I’m afraid not Piper. I’m sorry. We’ve got guys going up and down the hwy looking for the car. So far we’ve found nothing. But this weather isn’t help either. Now that it’s getting daylight it’ll make the search a lot easier. If she went off the road anywhere we wouldn’t be able to see the car. I’m sorry. As soon as I hear anything I’ll call right away.”
“Thank Darryl, we appreciate your honesty.” Prue said. While hugging Piper close to here as she started to cry again.
“ No problem. If there’s anything I can do just let me know OK?”
“We will, thanx.”
“I’ll see you out Darryl.” Leo said while trying to also keep his emotions in check.
“Thanx Leo. I’ll be in touch I promise.”
As Leo closed the door behind Darryl he headed into the living room and wrapped his arms around the two crying sisters. They’ll find her he thought. They had to.
As Darryl walked down the steps he thought to himself. I should have told them. But how do you tell someone that has a loved one missing that an escaped convict is also missing?
As Darryl headed into the station he saw a few of the guys that had been helping in the search for Phoebe. “Any more luck guys?”
“No sorry Morris. How is the family?”
“Not good. They didn’t get much sleep last night and I don’t imagine that they will until we find their sister.”
“Man that family has the worse luck, doesn’t it.”
“Yeah, but they have each other and right now that’s what will pull them through”
All the officers that had been helping out knew the Halliwell family. Mostly due to their connection with the Trudeau family. They all knew they history between their fallen friend and the oldest Halliwell. They also knew that the girls stuck together with each other through thick and thin. And that this must tearing them apart inside.
All of a sudden the office door flew open and a rookie cop came flying through the door. “ We found the car.”
Darryl dropped the file in his hand. “Where is it?” He had noticed that the officer had said car only and nothing about Phoebe.
“Buried in some bushes in a ditch about 5miles south of the cabin. The car looks like its fixable.”
God he though she almost made it there. “Now the question I’m afraid to ask. Was Phoebe in the car?”
“No Sorry Inspector, there wasn’t anyone found at the scene.”
“Thanx.” Now to call the Manor and at least let them know that we’ve found the car.
At the Manor nobody said a word while Piper made some breakfast. The ringing of the phone interrupted their silence. Piper and Prue just stared at each other neither one wanted to pick up the phone. Leo quickly caught on and went over to the phone and slowly picked it up.
“Halliwell residence.”
“Leo, Darryl here.”
“Hey Darryl.” Leo turned and looked at Piper and Prue, who were now holding each other. Ready to bare any news together.
Darryl told Leo what they had found so far and that so far Phoebe had not turned up.
“Thank you Darryl, I’ll let them know.”
“ No problem they’re like family to me too. I’ll keep you posted.”
Leo hung up the phone, and slowly turned to the girls. “They found the car.” Was all he could say. The words seemed to get stuck in his throat.
“And Phoebe?” Prue asked with concern.
He just shook his head.
“Where the hell is she then.” Piper cried out as Prue just held her close. Piper pushed Prue away and ran up stairs. Prue just looked after her.
“What did Darryl say Leo?” Prue asked between the tears that she could no longer control.
“The only sign of Phoebe is all her stuff still in the car. Purse, cell phone, and her bag of clothes. He said that the car looks like it swerved before it went into the ditch and a pile of bushes. Darryl days apparently the car is fixable.”
“ I don’t give a sh** about my car Leo. I can replace a car. I can not replace Phoebe.” Prue yelled.
Leo just stood there. He knew Prue didn’t mean to yell at him, she was just worried about Phoebe as they all were.
“I’m sorry Leo. I know it's not your fault. I didn’t mean to yell at you I’m just worried and I don’t know how much longer I can be strong for Piper.”
Leo approached Prue and just hugged her as she let it all out. “Its OK Prue let it out.”
After few minutes Prue pulled away. Leo reached up and whipped away her tears. “Thank you Leo. I’d better go up and check on Piper.”
“Ok I’ll wait down here.”
Prue made her way up the stairs. She knew where Piper was and slowly opened Phoebes bedroom door. There she found Piper in the fetal position softly crying on Phoebes bed. Prue just sat down on the edge of the bed and rubbed Pipers back gently.
“Prue what are we gonna do?” Piper asked wearily
“I don’t know Piper. But we have to believe that she is Ok. And be strong a little while longer.”
“I don’t know if I can Prue.” Piper sniffed
“Sure you can. We’ll get through this together. And when they find Phoebe well get to play Dr.’s Halliwell.”
This got the laugh from Piper that Prue was hoping. Phoebe had bugged them earlier about playing Dr. if she got sick. Now looks like that comment could come true. At least that was what the girls were both hoping.
“What do you say we get changed and see if we can help in the search. I’m sure that Darryl wouldn’t mind another set of eyes looking for her.” Prue said. “I don’t know about you but this sitting around waiting for everyone else to tell us what’s going on is driving me NUTS.”
“Ok.” Piper agreed as she slowly sat up on Phoebes bed and headed to her own room to change.
Prue just sat there, ‘Oh Phoebe where are you?’ She said to no one in particular. It was then that she said a silent prayer for Grams and Mum to watch out for their Baby.
The three of them piled into Pipers jeep about two hours later, after they had showered and changed and got the appropriate gear. It was still raining heavily but at least the wind had died down. They headed to the police station to see where the best spot to look was. Darryl had them follow him as he was heading out to the accident scene anyway. They had called the gang on the way up and told them what was going on. They told them if they wanted to help look for Phoebe to meet them at the site of the accident. Just keep driving along the hwy until you see all the rescue and police vehicles. They all said they would be there. Kate said she would stay at the cabin in case Phoebe showed up there.
They arrived at the scene of the accident and the gang was already there. Waiting for them. Donna came up and gave Prue and Piper a hug each. And vowed that between the four of them and Piper, Prue and Leo they would find Phoebe. No matter how long it took. At that Darryl came over to them.
“ We may have found something.” He said.
“Prue looked to him with hope. “What?”
He held up a business card, with a number written on the back of it. “We found this on the drivers side of the door.” Handing the card, in a plastic evidence bag to Prue. “Do you know who this is?”
“No, I can’t say that truckers are the kind of people that would hang around Bucklands or 415 Magazine.”
“Well then we may have found our first clue as to where Phoebe is. I’ll get someone in town to look into this.”
Darryl walk over to where the officer where laying out a search grid of the area. He pulled Inspector McAdams aside. “Shawn do me a favour and look into this for me will you?” As he handed Shawn the card found in the car.
“Sure Darryl. You think he may know something about all this?”
“I’m hoping”
“Ok, I’ll take care of it.”
“One other thing Shawn. Take with you a photo of that escapee.”
“You don’t think...”
“I’m not sure but right now I just wanna cover all the bases.”
“OK, I’ll call you with whatever I find out.”
Darryl walked back over to the girls and told them that Shawn was going to look into the truckers’ whereabouts last night. Shawn had gone through the academy with Andy and were soon fast friends, so he would do anything to help out his old friends’ second family.
Shawn arrived at the truck drivers’ house on the outskirts of the city. As he walked up the path to the house he could tell that a family lived there. Just by the looks of the house and yard he could tell that they were probably very similar to the Halliwells. It was that family bind that Shawn hoped would help him out. He reached the door and before he could knock a young girl greeted him. About Phoebes age I would guess He thought to himself.
“You her to talk to my Dad?” she inquired.
“Yeah is he home?”
“Sure come in I’ll go get him.”
“Dad, there’s a Police officer here to see you” She called up the stairs.
A few minutes later a man came down the stairs. Holding out his hand to greet Shawn. “Hi I’m John. What can I do for you Inspector?”
Shawn pulled the card out of his pocket and handed to John. “This your card?”
“Yeah, the company gives us generic cards then we just write our names on the front or back for the client. Why?”
“Where were you between 4PM last night and 6AM this morning?”
“I came home last night from my usual run down Hwy 10.”
Shawn took a picture of Phoebe and her sisters out of his pocket. “Do you know any of the girls in this picture?”
“I don’t know them but I have seen that girl.” Pointing at Phoebe.
“When.”
“Last night. As I said I was driving my regular route home on 10. That road is windy at the best of times but in last nights rain it was a little crazy. I came around a corner and I saw this car. She must have seen me at the same time and she swerved to avoid a collision. She ended up in a ditch then a bit further to the bushes. She hit her head pretty hard and we found her slumped over the steering wheel.”
“Wait, we? You weren’t alone.”
“Well yeah I was but at the same time another car came around the corner. The Dr. Said he would take her to the hospital as it would be quicker.”
“What Dr.?”
“I don’t know I didn’t get his name. I gave him my card and told him to call me and let me know how she was. She reminded me of my own daughter, Nat.” Pointing to the girl who let Shawn in.
Dreading the answer Shawn pulled another photo out of his pocket. “Is this the Dr. that helped you?”
“Yeah that’s him.”
Shawn got up and started towards the door. “Thank you John, you’ve been a big help.”
“What happened to the girl? And what’s her name?”
“Phoebe, and we’re not sure at this point what has happened to her. All I know right now is that she has two older sisters that are worried sick.”
“Can I help.”
“No you’ve help plenty already.”
“Let me know if you find her, please.”
“I will. And thank you.”
As Shawn walked back to his car he was wondering how they would tell Piper and Prue that their sister could be in the hands of and escaped convict. A murderous one at that.
When Shawn arrived back at the scene of the accident there was not that many people around. Out searching he thought to himself. If they only knew, he had thought. He had forgotten to ask John one more question that could help in the search and decided he would call him. After a few rings a male voice answered the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hello is John there?”
“Speaking.”
“John its Inspector McAdams, I spoke to you an hour a ago about the missing girl?”
“Yes. Have you found her already?”
“No, not yet. I did have one more question for you.”
“Certainly anything to help.”
“You said that the Dr. was going to take her to the hospital. Did he say which one and did you help him get her to the car?”
“No on both accounts. She was still in her car when I left. I did see him put her in his car though. As I was pulling out I saw him buckle her in the passengers side and he in turn went around the drivers side.”
“Do you remember anything special about the vehicle he was driving?”
“No sorry it was dark and the rain was coming down so hard it was hard to see anything really. And we were both concerned about the girl.”
“Ok thank you that helps out a lot.” And he hung up his cell phone
He got out of his car and walked over to Darryl. “Darryl.”
Darryl turns around and sees Shawn with a somber look. “Shawn, what did you find out?”
“Not good I’m afraid. Where are the Halliwells?”
“They are up in the bushes searching. It’ll help keep their mind off of things.”
“Yeah”
“So what gives, was the trucker able to help us?”
“Yeah he saw Phoebe. Apparently with the rain it looked like they were going to collide and Phoebe swerved off the Rd. The bad news is he also recognized the picture of our friend here.”
“Great. So she could be anywhere.”
“Yeah but I can tell you we may as well get this search party to go home.”
“Why is that?”
“I thought of something when I got here that I forgot to ask the guy. He saw our friend putting her into his car and driving off. So when and if we find her…..”
“It won’ be in this area.” Darryl finished
“Right.”
“Ok I’ll let the girls know and you tell these guys to pack up and head to town.”
“You got it. And Darryl.”
“Yeah?”
“Well find her...alive.”
“I hope so, for their sack.” As Darryl spotted the girls with Leo, and pointed in their direction.
Darryl got Leo’s attention while Piper and Prue headed towards their Jeep. As he walked towards Darryl Leo could tell that he had something important to tell him. And had a feeling that it was NOT good news. Just let her be alive he thought to himself.
“Hey Darryl.”
“Leo. I have some news that I thought I’d tell you first so you can be there for Piper and Prue.”
“Ok, just tell me up front Darryl, how bad is it?”
“Well at this point we still don’t know where she is and we are calling off the search in this area.”
“What! You can’t we have hardly even been searching.”
“I know Leo but we found out something that leads us to believe that she will not be found around the site of the accident.”
“I’m not liking where this is going Darryl.”
“Shawn just got back from talking to the truck driver, in town.” Darryl proceeded to tell him what Shawn had found out.
“So you’re saying that this Dr. took her to a hospital?”
“That was what the driver thought. It turns out that the Dr. wasn’t really a Dr. afterall.”
“What are you trying to say Darryl?”
“Early yesterday morning a prisoner escaped on his transfer from city jail to prison.”
“Tell me it’s not that guy I read about in the paper?”
“I’m afraid so Leo.”
Leo turned around trying to keep his emotions in check. He could feel the hot tears starting to run down his cheek. He looked over towards Piper and Prue. They had no idea, he thought. He whipped away the tears and turned back towards Darryl.
“Leo do you want me to tell them?” Darryl asked with sympathy.
“No, I’ll do it. Thanx anyway Darryl.”
“No problem. Do you want me to come with you?”
“Yeah that would be great.”
Meanwhile the Piper and Prue were sitting on the back bumper of Pipers jeep. Nothing needed to be said between the two sisters. That just sat there holding each other’s hand. Thinking of the good times they shared with their baby sister and the times that they hoped they would still have. Finally the silence was broken, but not by them.
“What miserable weather to be having to do a search like this.” Commented the one rescue worker
“Yeah, I sure hope we find the girl soon. This has got to be tearing up her family.”
“I bet, I don’t see the point any more though”
“Why?”
“Hey think about it. She has been missing since sometime around 6PM last night. It’s now almost 2pm. That’s what, 18hrs maybe more. The rain has washed away any sign of tracks. And the way it’s been raining and the wind last night. She has probably succumbed to hypothermia.”
“Unless she has found shelter somewhere”
“You are always the optimist aren’t you Ron?”
“I have to be in this job.”
“I Guess, I still say we’re wasting our time though.”
The two rescue workers didn’t realize that the sisters were even at the search site let alone sitting right beside them. Piper and Prue over heard their conversation and Prue lost it. She had kept her emotions in check for to long and the lack of sleep, and worry had reached its boiling point. She jumped off the bumper of the jeep and ran over the two rescue workers. Grabbing the one that had given up hope she spun him around and grabbed him by his jacket collar.
“SHE IS NOT DEAD. DON’T EVEN THINK THAT. IF YOU HAVE SUCH LITTLE FAITH WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE.!!!”
The guy was so taken back he just stood there shocked. As Prue continued to yell at him. Finally the guy came to his senses and tried to push Prue off of him. But she would not let go. Darryl and Leo heard the commotion and ran over to them, at the same time Piper was trying to get Prue to let go of the poor guy.
“Prue let him go, this is not helping Phoebe. Let go damn it.” She was actually afraid that Prue might use her powers on the poor guy. He didn’t know they had been sitting there. If he had he probably wouldn’t have said anything. Between Darryl, Leo, Piper and the other rescue worker they finally managed to get Prue off the guy.
“Ron get him outta her before she does that again.” Darryl told him
“Consider him gone Darryl.”
Piper lead Prue back to the jeep and sat her down on the bumper. All Prue could do was bend over with her head in her hands and cry. Piper sat down beside here and just wrapped her arms around her big sister.
“Let it out Prue, just let it all out.” She said calmly had she rocked Prue back and forth.
They sat like that for a little while Prue not wanting to let go of the comfort of her sister. She hated that she had lost control like that. But she just couldn’t take it anymore. And that guy saying that Phoebe was probably dead. She knew deep in her heart that he maybe right, she just wasn’t ready to deal with that right now. She finally pulled back from Piper whipping away her tears.
“I’m sorry Piper.”
“For what honey? If you hadn’t have done that I would have. And just think what I could have done if I froze him first. We could have both used him as a punching bag.”
That got a small chuckle out of Prue. “Yeah how would we explain that, hey?”
“I don’t know but it would have been interesting.”
Darryl and Leo hung back a bit until Piper had calmed Prue down. They weren’t sure how to tell them the news about Phoebe. Especially after what just happened. Knowing the escapee that had now possibly kidnapped Phoebe, what the rescue worker said could actually be true. She very well could be dead.
When they saw that Prue had calmed down some they decided that they had better just tell them. The not knowing was not helping them any. And if they kept it to themselves much longer the girls would probably be that much angrier with them for holding something like that back. They slowly made their way over to the jeep. Piper noticed the look on Leo’s face and knew that he had some very bad news for her and Prue.
“What is it Leo?” She asked as he approached her.
Prue looked up and also saw the look on his face.
Leo looked to Darryl for his own support. He was unsure right now how the girls would take the news he had to tell them.
“Um, well Shawn found out some info from the truck driver.”
“And” Prue prodded
Leo explained to the sisters what the driver had told Shawn. How Phoebe had swerved and that he came to her aid with the help of another man.
“So where is she? Did they take her to a hospital?” Prue asked between the tear. She had hope. Had they finally found her baby sister? She thought to herself.
Leo turned to Darryl. He couldn’t say it, and Darryl knew, so he finished for him.
“The other driver told the trucker he was a Dr.”
Piper could tell by the tone in his voice that there was a something more to it then that. “But..”
“He’s not. It looks like now that Phoebe has been kidnapped by an escaped convict that was being transported to prison yesterday morning.”
“Oh my god.” Prue let out quietly, as she started to cry again all her previous hope gone.
“Who?” Piper asked as she hugged Prue close.
“ A man by the name of Nick Baxter.”
“Oh my god, isn’t that they guy that butchered that family?” Piper asked. She to had started to cry. What would happen to Phoebe know? She to had just lost what little hope they had been hanging on to.
“Same guy. Look he most likely won’t hurt her. Right now she is better off alive to him. If we find him he can use her for freedom.”
“You mean like a hostage?” Leo asked
“Yeah, right now Phoebe is the only person that can actually help him right now.”
“Great, so my baby sister is out there somewhere, with some psycho, and this is a good thing?” Piper replied sarcastically
“Piper, we’ll find her. We have a good idea where he was headed.”
“So what’s the problem? Let go get my sister.” Prue said as she stood up.
“Whoa Prue, I said we had good idea. We’re not positive. Why don’t you guys go home and get some rest and I’ll call as soon as we know for sure.”
Leo looked at Piper and Prue and knew they would not get any rest until they found Phoebe. But he had to agree with Darryl. In the state they were in now they wouldn’t be any good to anybody. Especially if a demon decided now would be a good time to come after the remaining Charmed Ones.
“Come on, I’ll drive.”
Prue looked like she was about to protest but she knew deep down that Darryl was right. They had gotten very little sleep last night and had just spent the last two hours scouring the bushes. They were all tired, and wet.
“Ok, but you promise to call Darryl the second you know ANYTHING?”
“I promise I’ll call you. Now go home and try and get some rest.”
Piper and Prue got in the back while Leo drove back to the Manor. Nobody said a word. Eventually the events of the past 20hrs had caught up to them and they both had fallen asleep in the back just holding each other. Oh god, Leo thought, don’t let him hurt her.
In a large house in the woods about 50mile NE of the Bay area, with not another house around for miles we see a car parked in the driveway. It’s the same car from the night before. Totally surrounded by woods with a path leading down to a lake. In an upstairs bedroom we see a large old style four poster bed. Lying there motionless is Phoebe. A man sitting next to her, gently cleaning her wound that she had sustained from the accident. A small basin beside him, with the bloodied water from her cut. She stirs, and slowly awakens. As her eyes slowly come into focus she see the man, with a look of relief and concern on his face. She tries to speak.
“Ssshhh. You need to rest. You took a nasty hit to your head.”
That’s why my head is pounding. She thought. “What happened?” she asked him groggily.
“I was hoping you could tell me.” He answered.
She thought for a bit, then looked up at him. “ Don’t know. In fact I don’t know who I am.”
“Well you did take a nasty hit there. I found you last night in the storm, walking down the hwy.”
“Did I have any ID with me?”
“No, in fact you didn’t even have a coat. You probably have amnesia and a bit of hypothermia as well. You’ve been in and out of it all night.”
“How did I get here?”
“As I mentioned I found you wondering last night on the hwy. When I stopped you practically fainted in my arms. I brought you here, as it was closer then a hospital. Don’t worry I’m a Dr. So you’re in safe hands. Now why don’t you get some rest and then we’ll see if we can get some food into you.”
“Thank you.”
He got up to leave. “Your welcome. I couldn’t just leave a pretty lady in distress now could I?”
As he headed for the door Phoebe asked quietly. “What’s your name? Just because I can’t remember mine doesn’t mean we both have to be nameless.”
“Nick, Nick Baxter.”
As Phoebe drifts off to sleep, she starts having dreams or nightmares. She is unsure. It looks like her and two other women fighting what looks like some sort of evil being or demon. She wakes up screaming. Nick hears here from down stairs in the kitchen and runs upstairs. Rushing to Phoebes room he finds her sitting up, sweating and shaking.
“Are you OK?”
“I’m n..n..not s...s.sure.” She stutters out. “I s..s..saw these thhh...things that looked like p..pp..ure evil.”
“I’m sure it was only a bad dream.” As he whipped a cool cloth on Phoebes forehead, as she lay back down.
“ Yeah I guess so.” Phoebe replied unconvinced. There was more to it then that she thought. AUGH why can’t I remember?
“ Hey are you hungry?”
“ A bit I guess. Just something light if it’s not to much trouble.”
“No trouble at all. What do you say we have turkey sandwich picnic right here?”
“OK. I wonder if I like Turkey?”
“Well one way to find out. I’ll be right back.”
A few minutes later Nick came up with a turkey sandwich and some cut veggies for them.
“I’d have had a bottle of wine but under the circumstances I don’t think you should be having any.”
“Yeah you’re probably right.”
They sat in silence most of the time. With the odd small talk question being asked. More by Phoebe as she had no memory and wanted to know what was current in the world. By the end of dinner, she was getting tired and there was no hiding it.
“ I should go.” Nick said
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah look you’ve been through a lot in the past 24HR plus. You need to rest.”
“Ok, But I have been sleeping most of the day.”
“I know, here take this it will help you sleep.” He handed her a couple of pills.
She looked hesitant at him.
“Hey it’s Ok. Trust me they’re just Tylenol. I’m a Dr. remember?”
Yeah she thought what harm would it do?
He handed her a glass of water and she swallowed the two pills. After a few minutes they started to take effect. Nick came in to check on her, after a few hours, and Phoebe was fast asleep. Now to continue my work in the basement he thought. With that he turned out the lights and head to the basement.
Back in San Francisco, Piper had made dinner for her Prue and Leo. She was surprised that Leo was even still there. I wonder why they haven’t called him. She pushed that thought to the back of her mind as Leo came into the kitchen. Leo went over and stood by Piper and put his arm around her shoulder.
“What’s for dinner?” Leo asked
“Just some soup and sandwiches. I don’t have the energy to make a big meal.”
“That’s ok Piper. I don’t think I could eat a big meal.” Prue responded as she walked into the kitchen.
Piper turned to here sister. “Hey their sleepy head.”
“Hi.” Prue replied. She had fallen back to sleep on the couch after they had gotten home from the search site.
“Feeling like a little something to eat?”
“Yeah that would good, even thought I’m not that hungry.”
“Prue we still have to eat. We can’t let our lives just shut down.”
“I know, it’s just....”
“I know.” Piper said as she approached her big sister and placing an arm around her shoulder. “I miss her too.”
Suddenly Piper noticed Leo looking up to the sky. No, she thought, I need him now more then anything. Don’t you dare take him away from us?
“I gotta go.” He said solemnly
“You know sometimes your bosses have the WORST timing.” Piper replied with anger in her voice.
“I know. I’ll be back as soon as I can.” He went over to Piper and gave her a quick kiss on the lips and gave Prue a kiss on the cheek. “I love you.” As he orbed out.
“I love you too.” Piper replied to a shimmer of blue lights.
Trying to get her sister’s mind off Leo leaving Prue piped up. “So, What’s for grub sis?”
“I’ll have you know that I do NOT make GRUB.” She answered and playfully swatted her sister.”
They both laughed, and sat down to Pipers soup/Sandwiches. It was the first time in what seemed like forever that they had laugh. But it may be awhile before they did it again. Until they found Phoebe there may not be much more laughter at 1329 Prescott.
After Dinner they both helped out with the dishes. Neither one wanting to be alone to think of Phoebe, out there somewhere. Trying to just keep busy. They eventually found themselves sitting in the sunroom, just leaning against each other. Sitting silently they started to drift to sleep.
“I’m heading to bed before I fall asleep with you leaning against me.” Prue said in a playfully tone to here sister.
“So what are saying here sis? I need to go on a diet or something.” Piper replied, as she got off of Prue and hit her with the pillow she had being holding.
Prue blocked the hit and throw another pillow at Piper with her power.
“Hey no using your powers. That is SOOO cheating. I agree with Phoebe, you cheat in pillow fights now. What happened to the good old days when we had an all out pillow war? No powers to help us.”
“Gone forever sister dear!” As she hit Piper with another pillow.
Piper stopped and just looked at Prue. “Don’t say gone forever Prue.”
Prue then realized the impact of what she had just said. “I didn’t mean it that way Piper.”
“I know. It just sounds...”
Prue wrapped her arms around Piper, and pulled her close, as Piper started to cry. After a few minutes she pulled away.
“You’d think with all the crying we’d done in the last 30hrs we wouldn’t have any tears left.” She said to Prue between sniffs.
“I know what you mean.” Prue replied. “Come on lets try and get some sleep.” As she led Piper over to the stairs.
After they had changed Piper softly knocked on Prues bedroom door. “Prue? Are you asleep yet?” As she slowly opened the door.
“No.”
“Hey” She paused. “Can I sleep her tonight?” Piper asked quietly.
“You don’t even need to ask Pipe.” As Prue held her arms out to her little sister.
Piper crawled into Prues bed and her welcoming harms. After a few minutes Piper softly asked. “We’ll find her won’t we Prue?”
“Of course we will honey. We just have to believe that wherever she is she is being watched by Mum and Grams.”
“How do you know?”
“I asked them to watch out for her yesterday before we left for the accident site.”
“Oh”
With that said the two sisters fell asleep. The oldest, protecting the youngest in her arms. That was also how Leo found them when he returned several hours later. He knew why they were both in Prues’ bed. He knew from observing them over the years and even now. Prues’ bed was the safety net the sisters always looked for. No matter what, if they were troubles or upset about anything to Prues’ bed they went. It was their safe haven. Not wanting to disturb them he quietly closed the door and went downstairs to the couch.
Prue awoke and recalled the conversation that she and Piper had just before they went to sleep. She was still holding Piper. It was as if they had not moved all night. She slowly pulled here arm out from under her still sleeping sister. Then she just watched her little sister sleep. She looks so peaceful, Prue thought. Once we find Phoebe everything will be back to normal. Placing a soft kiss on Pipers forehead, she slowly got out of bed, careful not to wake Piper. She grabbed her robe and left the room.
A few minutes later Piper also awoke from her slumber. Wondering where Prue was she grabbed her robe and headed downstairs to start some breakfast. Not finding Prue in the kitchen she figured that she was in the bathroom. Taking all the hot water no doubt. Piper chuckled to herself. Well at least she made some coffee. Mind you, I’m not sure if I want to drink it. Oh well, maybe a Prue specialty will help me get through the day. Pouring herself a cup of coffee she made her way to the sunroom. To her surprise Leo was sitting there just staring out the window, seemingly deep in thought. She came up behind him and placed a soft kiss on the back of his neck. Turning around he saw her smiling face.
“Hi there.” He said
“Hi yourself. I’m assuming that if you are here now that this coffee is actually drinkable?”
“Yeah I just made it. Prue still in bed?”
“No, I thought she was down here. When I didn’t see her I figured she was must be in the bathroom.”
“I don’t think so. I haven’t heard any water running. Do you want to check the attic?”
Piper then realized where her big sister was. “No, I think I know where she is.” As she turned and headed up the stairs
“Whe..” Leo started but then he too realized where the eldest Halliwell was.
Piper slowly opened Phoebes bedroom door. Sure enough, Prue was sitting on the bed hugging Phoebe’s favorite bear. Knees pulled up close to her chest, sobbing quietly. Piper slowly approached her sister, and sat on the edge of the bed. Tucking a stray piece of hair behind Prues’ ear she asked. “Are you ok Prue?”
“I just want her back Piper.” She said barely above a whisper.
“I know you do sweetie, so do I.” Pulling Prue into a hug.
They just sat there with Piper cradling her big sister, rocking her back and forth.
“How about some breakfast, sweetie?” Piper asked.
“I’m not really that hungry. Thanx anyway.”
“Prue you have to eat.” Piper insisted. “I can’t have you getting sick when I need you. Besides Leo’s cooking.”
Prue looked at her little sister with surprise on her face.
“He came back early this morning apparently.”
Whipping away her tears Prue got up off Phoebes bed and placed the bear back on top of the pillow. “Well let us not keep the chef waiting then.” Prue said. Giving Piper another hug, she walked out of Phoebes room and headed downstairs to find Leo, and a cup of coffee.
Once she was gone Piper looked to the sky. “I hope Prue was right and that you’re watching out for her.” With that said she too went down stairs to see what mess Leo was making in “her” kitchen.
It was now Sunday morning and Phoebe had officially been listed as a missing person, through SFPD, late Saturday night. The time listed, 5:15pm Friday night, as that had been the time that she had spoken to Kevin at the cottage, the last time anyone had seen or spoken to her. Everyone knew that the more time that passed the harder it would be to find Phoebe.
Meanwhile in the woods, Phoebe awoke to a banging. It sounded like some one hammering. I wonder what that is; it’s not helping my headache any. She slowly sat up. Whoa to fast she thought, as she got a dizzy spell. Between this head injury and getting soaked the other night, All I want is a nice hot bath. Maybe that will help me warm up. And some homemade chicken soup, with Piper serving it to me in bed. Wait a minute, she thought. Who is Piper? Oh I wish I could remember something. This seems like it should be important to me. The banging continued, it seemed to echo through Phoebes head. She finally decided to go see what it was all about. As she slowly got out of bed she got very dizzy. Whoa take it easy kiddo. In spite of everything she knew that she was very sick, on top of her head injury. Ok just take one step at a time. She slowly made her way out to the hallway. It was an older home, older then the Manor she thought. Manor? What Manor?” Augh this is so frustrating. If I can remember one thing that may trigger a bigger picture…I may remember who I am.
Holding the railing for support, she slowly made her way downstairs, and found herself in a lavish living room area. It looked very old, maybe dating back to the civil war she thought. Ok this is getting very frustrating I can remember something’s but I can not remember who I am. She makes her way through the house. Searching and studying everything that she sees. Maybe something will trigger my memory, she thought hopefully. As she made her way to the kitchen the banging seemed to get louder. Still a little woozy and weak, she made her way to the back of the house. The noise seemed to be coming from the basement. She put her hand on the door when suddenly she got very dizzy. She saw black and white pictures in her head in and she gasped. What the heck was that? Maybe a bit of my memory coming back to me, but it made no sense. Leaning against the counter for support she took a few deep breaths. Maybe I should sit down, she thought. Turning slowly to head to the kitchen table she heard the door behind her open suddenly. Startled she turned around to see who was there. Only she turned to fast. Letting go of the counter, she lost her balance and got extremely dizzy. Losing consciousness she started to fall to the floor.
A pair of strong arms, which seemed to scoop her right up, caught her. Carrying her to the living room she was gently placed on the couch. Grabbing a throw from the back of a chair he covered her up so she would not get cold. He left her there and came back a few minutes later with a wet cloth. Placing it gently on her forehead. Pushing the hair off her face he couldn’t help but notice her natural beauty. She softly moaned as she slowly came to.
“Wh...what happened?”
“You passed out. What were you doing out of bed anyway? I thought I told you to stay in bed.”
“I..I heard this banging and I was going to find out what was going on. It sounded like it was coming from the basement.”
“There is nothing down there.” He stated maybe a bit to harshly “It was probably the axe you heard. I was out chopping wood.” He said a bit calmer.
“Oh.” She replied.
“Stay here and rest. I’ll get you some juice and another Tylenol. Got to keep your fluids up when you’re sick, you know.”
“Thank you, the Tylenol would be good about now.” She replied as she closed her eyes. Her head was pounding worse then before. Oh I just wish this headache would go away and my memory would come back.
He left again and came back a few minutes later with a large Orange juice and a bottle of Tylenol. “Here you go. Take two of these and have some juice and you should start to feel better.”
“Thank you again. It is very kind of you to take me in like this.” She said. “I’m a total stranger and yet here you are helping me.”
“It’s nothing really. Now get some rest. If you need anything I’ll either be in the kitchen or sitting over there, reading a book.” He pointed to a chair in the corner. “I want to keep and eye on you in case your headache should get worse.” He got up to leave when she stopped him.
“Nick.”
“Yes.”
“Do you think I have a family out there somewhere that is worried about me?”
“I’m sure there is someone out there looking for you.” He knew that to be true, because he knew that they were looking for him. And by know someone must have found her car. I tried to cover it as much as I could after that trucker left, but it was raining to hard and I had to get out of there before anyone else came along. “I’m sure.” He repeated to her. “Now, rest.”
As Phoebe went to sleep, Nick sat in the chair, just watching her. Such beauty he thought. You have no idea do you sweet girl. I must keep her out of the basement at all costs. It would be a shame to have to kill here before she wears out her usefulness. She could be my ticket to freedom. If the cops find me here I can use here as a hostage. I would have my ticket out of this country. I just have to wait a few more days and they will have moved the search to other parts. Then I can make my way on the old monks’ trials right into Canada. From there I’m home free. The only problem is what do I do with her once I get there….
Back at the Manor, Piper, Prue and Leo had finished breakfast and were waiting for any word from Darryl.
“What’s taking so long? I thought he said they knew where this guy was going?” Prue said. You could hear the frustration in her voice.
“I don’t know Prue. Maybe we should call him.” Piper remarked
“I may have an idea.” Leo suggested.
“What?” They both said.
“Have you guys tried scrying?”
“I thought that you said that this was none magic related?” Prue replied.
“I did. But what harm would it do. Afterall scrying is not just for supernatural. It’s used to find people. Right?”
“What have we got to lose Prue?“
“That was Phoebes specialty. Do you think we can pull it off?”
“We can try it.”
“OK. I’ll go and get the crystal. You go get a map of California.”
They both went off in search of the need materials.
At the station Darryl wasn’t having much more luck. They had stacked out the place that they thought Baxter was heading to. He had yet to show. Getting more frustrated as the hours pass, he knows that Phoebes luck was running out. As he sat at his desk with his head in his hands he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Got much sleep since this all started?” It was Shawn.
“No I can’t say I have.”
“Well I have good news and bad news. Which do you want first?”
“Bad.”
“We have a missing couple about 50miles NE of the bay area. You’ll never guess what he did for a living.”
“What?”
“He was a country doctor. Older couple that retired out in the lake district. He would help out the families that summered out there. Apparently the sweetest guy that you’ll ever meet.”
“So there is good news that goes with that how?”
“Well, that was the direction that our friend was heading. We think that maybe he killed the couple and has assumed their identity. There aren’t too many people that live out there permanently, so it would be easy to pass off as the Doctor for a while. Until such time that he thinks we have moved the search far enough away from that area. That way he can move on with less pressure.”
“Sounds like we may be on to something here.”
“Yeah and get this. About 10miles north of there are the old Monk’s trails. If he got onto those we’d lose him forever. They would take him straight into Canada.”
“That would be very bad. Once he got that far who knows what he would do with Phoebe. Ok so where in the lake district did this old couple live anyway.”
“About half a mile off the lake.”
“Ok you get the necessary gear and I’ll call the Halliwells.”
“You think that a good idea Darryl?”
“Why?”
“Well what if he has already….”
“I promised them I would call as soon as I found out ANYTHING.”
“Your call buddy. I just hope that we find Phoebe alive.”
“Ok I got the map Prue you got the crystal thingy?”
“Yeah here.”
“Ok go ahead.”
Prue held the crystal over the map. Putting all her thoughts into Phoebe. Nothing. “It’s not working.”
“You’re trying to hard.” Leo commented from behind them. “You have to let it flow out of you naturally”
“OK.”
She tried again. She thought of Phoebe when she was young, all the good times they had. Reading to her when she was a baby. The fights they would get into as kids, teens and later adults. When Phoebe had found their heritage. Suddenly it moved. In fact it moved so fast it flew right out of Prues hand. Standing straight up in the Lake District. 50miles NE of the Bay.
“I think you found her.” Leo said
“Looks like it.” Replied Piper, now with hope in her voice.
“Let’s call Darryl. They can start a new search.” Said Prue.
With that the phone rang, startling everyone. Again neither Piper or Prue could answer it. So Leo slowly walked over to the phone.
“Halliwell residence.”
“Leo, its Darryl. Are the girls there”
“Yeah.”
“Let them know that we may be on to something. If they want in on a new search to meet me outside the Manor in 10minutes.”
“What’s going on Darryl?”
“We may have found our guy about 50miles NE of the Bay area in the Lake District.”
“Whoa.”
“What.”
“We were just gonna call you with same info.”
“What? How did they know?”
“Well let’s say they had some help.”
“Oh better yet Leo, I don’t wanna know. Have the girls meet me out front.”
“Will do. And thanx Darryl.”
“Don’t thank me yet.” With that he hung up.
Leo filled in the girls quickly and they all got dressed. They were waiting on the porch when Darryl pulled up in an unmarked four by four truck.
“What’s with the new truck Darryl?” Prue asked as she and Piper got into the back seat.
“I borrowed it from the impound yard. Our friend won’t be expecting us in this. It doesn’t exactly look like a police car, now does it?”
“True.” They all said.
It was a long and silent drive. Nobody willing to say anything in fear of what they might find. Prue and Piper just sat in the back of the truck together just holding each other and silently praying that there biggest fear was almost over.
Later that afternoon, Phoebe awoke. She thought she heard the thumping again. Its probably just Nick cutting wood again, she thought. Her head was feeling much better. But she still ached all over. Oh how I would like to be home in my big bed with Prue mothering me right about now. Wait there it is again. Who is Prue? Oh god I wish someone would explain all this to me. I get these bits and pieces of what seems like a memory and then gone. Who are these people I seem to recall in glimpses. Are they friend or foe? I guess only time will tell.
Feeling a bit better she decided to find Nick, maybe she could run that hot bath she was thinking of earlier. That might take away my aches and pains. She swung her feet off the couch and waited for any dizzy spells. Nothing. Ok so lets just take this one step at a time, she thought. She slowly got up from the couch. Ok so far so good. She made her way to the back of the house. Again the thumping. I know that it’s coming from downstairs. Maybe Nick is chopping wood down there instead of outside in the rain. Would be a lot dryer. As she again grabbed the door handle to the basement, she again had flashes of black and white pictures in her head. Only this time she seemed to recognize some of the faces. She just couldn’t place where. Maybe it’s my memory coming back, she hoped. Then I can go and find my family…If I have any. This time after the pictures she was able to get the door open. The thumping got louder. Nick must be down here. I’ll just go down and say hi and let him know I’m going upstairs to take a hot bath. That way he won’t be worried when he finds me not on the couch.
She slowly opened the door, and starts to descend the stairs. The thumping continues. As she walks down the stairs she suddenly feels something wet under her steps. She looks down and sees blood. A few more steps down and she sees the shadow of a man, holding up an axe. Then just as suddenly it comes down. Out of pure instinct she screams. The shadow turns suddenly and sees her standing there. Both seemed to be frozen in time. Phoebe is the first to react and runs to the top of the stairs, screaming for all she is worth. She runs through the house and straight out the front door. Back out into the driving rain and wind. She continues to run, not knowing where she is going. Just knowing that she has to get away from that house and that man. She runs through the woods down to the lake. She is finding it difficult to run in the nightgown she has on. No longer the satin white from earlier, it is now covered in mud. She trips from exhaustion. She is unsure how much longer she can run. She is finding it hard to breathe and her head is again pounding on her temple. Which way to go? She thought. She sees a dock at the lake and heads towards it. Maybe there will be a boat I can hide in. As she approaches the dock she stumbles. Not much further. Keep going Phoebe you can do this. You have to your sisters are going to be worried about you. At the realization that her memories where flooding back to her Phoebe lost her concentration and stumbled again. Only this time she didn’t catch herself in time and she stumbled right into the lake, hitting her head on the dock as she fell.
Nick went running after her. Sh**. He thought. How the hell did this happen? I have to somehow convince her she didn’t see what she thinks she may have seen. Maybe she just thought that was what she saw. I may still be able to rectify this. Thinking the whole time he was chasing after Phoebe, through the woods. She can’t get far, he thought. She’s sick and has no shoes on. Her trail was marked clearly in the wet mud. He could see where she had fallen several times. She’s heading to the lake. Probably towards the dock. He turned suddenly taking a short cut. He arrived at the north side of the dock and saw her running out towards the boats. She stumbled twice. Ok calm down Nick. She can’t go anywhere from there. He saw her stumble again, only this time she did not recover. She fell into the lake. Wait what happened? She isn’t coming back up. Sh**, I can’t lose her now. He ran as fast as he could and dove into the murky waters. The lake goes almost calm. We wait.
PPPFFF. He emerges from the surface, gasping for breath. Holding a lifeless body he makes his way to shore. He feels for a pulse. Nothing. He starts CPR. After a few minutes she spits up water, gasping for air. Totally exhausted from the run and fall she passes out. He picks her up and carries her back to the house. I’ll have to find out first what she saw, and decide from there what I’m to do.
When Darryl, Piper, Prue and Leo arrived at the police station at the lake they saw part of the gang walking in. With both Kevin and Donna leading the way.
“Darryl, who called them?” Prue inquired.
“Oh, I had Shawn give them a call. I know they would want to be in on this too. And I get the feeling that Kevin especially wouldn’t want to miss this.” He answered. “I am I right?”
“Yeah.” Piper said from the back.
They climbed out of the truck and made their way into the station. When they enter Donna spotted them and came over, and pulled Piper into a hug. “How are you guys doing?”
“We’re Ok Donna.” She answered. “And we’ll be that much better once we get Phoebe home.”
Prue didn’t say anything she was to scared. Scared of getting this close and losing her baby sister. Scared of breaking down in front of everyone. She was starting to have doubts, and that scared her more then anything. I’m starting to lose hope, she thought. No she’s ok I have to believe that, Piper and Phoebe are all I have left.
They walked into a large conference room that was full of police officers, and maps all over the walls. They had the house stacked out since 3PM, with no sign of activity. There was also no sign of any vehicles. So at this point they were unsure if there lead had been legit.
“We’ve waited long enough.” Darryl said. “We have to go in and now. The longer we wait one of two things are going to happen. If he gets tired of Phoebe and realizes she can’t help him, he may just kill her know. The second thing.” He paused and turned to Prue and Piper. “If he’s not there then we’re giving him more time to get further away, and we’re back to square one.”
“I agree.” Said Prue
They all turned to her.
“My baby sister is either in that house or is half way to Canada by now. If you don’t do something now we may never know and I will have lost her forever.” She said through the tears. Piper too was now crying and they just hugged each other. Leo was there giving as much support as he could. He knew however that the only thing that would make them whole again was to find Phoebe and soon.
“Ok then, We go.” Said the sheriff, “But we go on foot from 2mile out. I don’t want him hearing any vehicles, and getting spooked.”
Nick carried Phoebe into the house and up the stairs. Ok think Nick. What did she see? Wait, idea. He carefully placed Phoebe back on the bed, covered her up in the blankets and went downstairs to the basement. He came back up few minutes later just to watch her. Be there when she woke up. He placed a cool wet cloth on her forehead and waited. Even when the cops do leave this area, I may not be able to go for awhile. She has such a high fever, she’s not going anywhere. Under normal circumstances I would say the only place she was going was the hospital. He sat and waited. About an hour later she stirred. But she did not awake. Must be dreaming he thought.
Phoebe was dreaming. Dreaming of the life she had. The sisters she loved. It was all coming back to her. All the good and the bad. The time she broke her leg playing at the park and Prue had carried her on her back all the to Andy’s place to get her to the hospital. All the fights that she and Prue had, the sister nights just the three of them having a slumber party in Pipers room. Finding the Book of Shadows and finding a new connection to each other through their heritage. She stirred again, and slowly awoke. Nick just looked at her, not wanting to startle her.
“Oh, where am I.” Then she remembered what happened. Finding Nick holding the axe and bringing it down on something. Was that a person? No that’s crazy, she thought, but what about the blood on the stairs?
She opened her eyes. The drapes were partially drawn closed. She could see him sitting there, just watching her. She looked at him with fear. What if it wasn’t my imagination? But if that’s true why am I still alive? Oh I just wanna go home. She started to cry, missing her sisters more then she ever had before.
“What’s wrong?” He asked
“I remember everything.” She said
“That’s great, so are you gonna tell me your name?” He pretended as if nothing had happened.
“Ph….Ph…Phoebe Halliwell, and I ha….ave two older sisters. P..Prue and P..P..Piper.”
“Well it nice to meet you Phoebe.” He held out his hand.
She didn’t move.
“What’s wrong? I thought we were friends?”
“This may sound crazy but I thought I saw you…”
“What. Oh you mean when you saw me in the basement.”
She just shock her head. To scared to speak.
“And you saw the blood on the stairs?”
She nodded again.
He let out a small chuckle. “I cut myself cutting the wood.” Here see. He showed her his hand wrapped in a bandage. The blood soaking through.
“Oh my God. I feel really silly now.”
“Don’t worry about it. How are you feeling?”
“Like I fell in a lake in the middle of winter.” She replied with a small smile.
“Well that could be because you did” He smiled back. “You need to rest. I’d take you to a hospital but the weather is really stating to act up again. I think it may be better if we wait till it dies down.”
“OK. Do you have any bubbles?”
“Excuse me?” He didn’t understand what she was talking about.
“I would love a hot bubble bath and to get out of this muddy gown.”
He laughed, “Yeah I think there might be some around here somewhere. I’ll go start one for you.”
“Thank you.”
“No Problem. Now Until then you rest.”
With that he turned to walk out of the room, as her turned back to say something to her he noticed that she had gone back to sleep. I guess the bubbles will have to wait.
He made his way back down to the basement and stopped to get a clean bandage for his hand. So she has her memory back. I hope for her sack she’s not a big news watcher, if she is there is a very good chance she will recognize my name. Would be a shame, such a pretty girl.
The cop cars had parked a little more then two miles from the house that they had been watching. Still no sign of activity around it. As they spread out to start from various points they walked. Slowly and carefully. The other officers that did not know the sisters had tried to keep them back at the station. But both Prue and Piper had insisted on going. Even Darryl knew there would be no holding them back. He also knew with their powers that there was no way that they would get hurt. Physically that was. If they found Phoebe here and she was dead there would be no magic in the world that would help them. The same would go if there was nobody at the house. In some ways that would be worse, the not knowing. He had dealt with that to many times in his career. A family needs closure.
“Prue.”
Prue turned to her little sister who had stopped on the trail. “Yeah honey?”
“What if she’s not here?”
“We have to believe that she is Piper. We have to have faith that Grams and Mum are protecting here.”
“What if this is something that our magic can’t save?”
Reaching out for Piper, Prue put her arm around her. “I don’t know Pipe, I really don’t. I’m just as scared as you are, believe me. But I have to hold on to some hope or all is lost.”
They stood in the trail just holding each other. Darryl could see them in front of him and stopped. They need this time right now. So he just waited until they were ready to move on. After a few minutes they continued the trek through the dense wet brush. The rain was really coming down now. Hard then it had been all weekend. At least in the woods they were all protected from the wind, that was howling through the trees above.
Phoebe awoke again and called out for Nick. No answer. I wonder where he went. I’ll start my bath and then look in the kitchen for him. She slowly pushed herself to sit up. She didn’t have much strength but managed to sit up fully. Ok that was easy, she thought. Now the hard part. She swung her legs over the high bed and places them on the cold floor. She saw her clothes on the chair in the corner. She remembered that she had had her favorite sweatshirt on when she left the Manor. Prue and Piper had given it to her years ago as a birthday gift. It was big and fluffy and she loved to just sit and cuddle into it. They keep trying to get me to give it up, but I cant, it was given to me with love and I have it all nice and broken in. I’ll put that on after my bath. That should help me warm up. As she picked it up she was pulled into a premonition.
She saw her sisters holding each other and crying. Then she saw them walking in the forest through driving rain. Then again holding each other crying, but they were still in the forest
She came out of her vision and gasped. What did it mean? Are they looking for me? I have to find out. Something’s are still a bit fuzzy. I remember leaving the manor and calling Kevin at the cottage. Then the lights. I was in an accident. Then why didn’t they take me to a hospital? It doesn’t make sense. Maybe it was because of the weather, to dangerous to drive to far maybe. I’ll have to ask Nick when I see him.
She was making her way towards the bathroom to run a bath. As she found the bathroom she bent to pick up a towel that was on the floor. Again she was pulled into a premonition. Only this one made more sense to her. Nick in the kitchen with a knife cutting his hand then wrapping it in a towel then bandaging it. Then him in the basement, with the axe. Next to his feet was an arm, which was lying on top of what looked like a piece of a body. She came out of vision and felt the bile rush to her throat. She leaned over the toilet and let what little was in her stomach out. After a few minutes, she realized that what she saw earlier in the day was not her imagination. He had butchered someone and maybe more then one person. Then something struck her. The guy on the news that had butchered that family just outside of San Francisco…..Oh my god his name was Nick Baxter. Phoebe knew, with all her strength she had to get out of there and fast. But how? I have a mild if not more serious concussion and probably a temperature of over 100. I should be in bed now. I don’t have the strength to fight him. I could pretend I don’t know until I get my strength back. Or maybe I can call Prue and Piper. Oh god what am I going to do. She sat on the edge of the tub with her head in her hands and started to cry.
“Are you ok”
“Augh. You scared the crap out of me.”
“Sorry. I came to check on you and you weren’t there I was concerned. Then I heard you crying. Are you OK?” He asked again.
“Yeah I just miss my sisters.” That wasn’t a total lie. She did miss them.
“Oh. Are you thinking of have a bath now or did you wanna wait until after some hot soup?”
Phoebe was unsure now what to do. Soup might be good, it would help build my strength. “Soup would be great. Thanx.”
“Ok, why don’t you change into something drier and I’ll get the soup on.” She suspects something I’m sure of it. Only one option now. “Ok I’ll see you in a bit.”
“Ok.’
Nick made his way down the stairs as Phoebe watched him from the bedroom door. She quickly changed and headed down the stairs. She got half way down when she spotted Nick at the bottom. He was just standing there, staring at her. His stare was piercing through her skin. She wanted to run, but couldn’t move. Then she noticed it. In his right hand, glistening with the afternoon sun coming through the windows directly on it.
“Wh…what is th…that for?” She stuttered out.
“Oh I think you know Phoebe.”
She tried to cover. “N…no I do..don’t.”
He yelled up to her. “OF COURSE YOU DO. DON’T PLAY COY WITH ME!”
She started to cry, oh god she thought I’m never gonna see Piper or Prue again. “Why?” she quietly asked.
“Because you know to much. You found out my little secret.”
“P…ple..please Nick, j…just let me go. I wo…won’t tell anyone wh…where you are.”
“Oh like I’m dumb enough to believe that.” He was now slowly walking up the stairs towards her.
Phoebe turned and ran as fast as she could. Nick just continued to slowly walk up the stairs. He knew there was no where for her to go up there. Beside she was sick what could she do? Phoebe ran to the bedroom she had been sleeping in closing the door behind her. Think Phoebe think. There has to be a way out of this. She was getting tired and she had only run about 10feet. She could here him approaching the door. Ok this is not good, as she looked around the room for anything to use. There. Suddenly the door opened, and he slowly entered the room.
“You can’t hide in here forever Phoebe.” He paused just inside the door, listening. Suddenly he turned around but it was to late. She brought the lamp crashing down on him. He fell and she didn’t even look back to see what she had done. She just ran out the door, towards the stairs.
“PHOEBE!!!!!”
She ran down the stairs towards the front door. It wouldn’t open. SH** she thought. Then she noticed the bolt and chain on the door. She couldn’t get them off. Oh god help me. She couldn’t hear him anymore. And this concerned her more then anything. For she didn’t know where he was. She finally fumbled with the chain and lock, and managed to unlock the door. She swung it open and ran outside back into the driving rain and wind. Right into the arms of…..
Right into the arms of Prue. They both screamed. Phoebe because she thought Nick had her and Prue from the shock of having someone run into her screaming. Then just as suddenly both Prue and Piper realized who it was that was screaming at them and trying to break away.
“Phoebe!! Ssshhhh baby I got you it’s ok.” Prue said trying to calm her sister down. She held her as tight as could, but Phoebe still kicked and screamed, Piper also grabbed on to Phoebe. Not wanting her hurt herself. Phoebe still squirmed in her sister’s arms.
“Phoebe. Phoebe, look at me.” Prue said firmly but gently. “It’s me Prue. And look, Piper is here too. Nobody’s going to hurt you. I promise. We’ll never let you go.”
“P…P..Prue? P…PP..Piper?”
“Yeah sweetie we’re both here.”
Phoebe started to calm down some, however still very scared. She was still shaking, even knowing that she was with her protector. She was cold and scared. Then she remembered Nick. Where was he?
Suddenly she heard a scream behind her. Just as she turned she saw Nick running at her with the knife in his hand high above his head. Prue was just about to throw him when they suddenly heard a shot, then another, and another. He stopped, and stared at Phoebe. Then the knife dropped from his hand and he fell, slowly to the hard wooden floor. All Phoebe could do was stare at the body on the floor. Then her knees slowly started to buckle from underneath her, and she too fell to the floor. Prue was still holding on to her and caught her before she fell all the way.
Piper looked up and saw Darryl standing just inside the kitchen doorframe with his gun still out. Just staring at the guy on the floor. He then looked up and saw Piper looking at him. “Thank you.” She whispered to him. Then turned her attention to her baby sister.
Prue had led Phoebe carefully to the ground and was know holding her on her lap. Phoebe was tucked up in the fetal position sitting on Prue laps, crying uncontrollably. Piper sat down next to them and hugged her baby sister. There they sat. Phoebe on Prues lap and Piper sitting next to her with her arms around Phoebe as well and with Prues arms around the both of them. Rocking Phoebe ever so gently to calm her down.
“Get that ambulance down here now!” Darryl ordered to someone on the radio.
A few minutes later the waiting ambulance came down the driveway, and the paramedics came rushing out over to the girls. Phoebe wouldn’t let go of Prue for anything. Even her sisters tried to convince her that it was ok. She refused. She just shock her head, and continued to cry, and hung on to Prue for dear life.
“I’ll carry her.” Prue finally said. So Prue picked herself and Phoebe up with Piper helping and the three walked over to the Ambulance. They climbed inside and they sat on the gurney together
The ride into town was long and quiet. Except the soft crying of Phoebe, who was yet to let go of her sisters. She finally cried herself to sleep. Prue very carefully placed Phoebe on the gurney by herself, with Prue and Piper holding her hand and each other.
“She’ll be Ok right Prue?” Piper asked worriedly
“I think so Pipe, I think so.”
When they arrived at the hospital the rushed Phoebe to the ER. The ambulance crew had called ahead and explained the situation. Including the fact that they would mostly likely have to let the sisters go into the ER as well. However when they arrived, Phoebe was still a sleep. So when they got her out of the ambulance she was calm. And so once again Pure and Piper had to wait. They knew that Phoebe was sick they could feel the heat coming off of her when they held her on the stairs, what they didn’t know was how bad. They also noticed the cut on her forehead. However, that seemed to be cleaned up, and cared for. It was the unknown they didn’t like. What had that animal done to their baby? Did he hurt her? All these thoughts kept going through their heads, as they waited. Piper fell asleep in Prues arms while the clocked ticked the hours by. Then from pure exhaustion Prue too started to succumb to her tiredness.
“Phoebe Halliwells family?”
Prue shot open her eyes at the sound of their sister’s name. “That’s us.” As she gently woke Piper. “How is our sister?”
“Well looks like she hit her head pretty bad, probably from the car accident. It has been taken good care of though. Who ever fixed her up know what they were doing.” The Dr. replied. “Was she sick at all before this happened do you know?”
“I don’t think so.” Piper looked at Prue and she too shock her head no. “Why?”
“Well she as the start of ammonia. If she was sick before, that would explain the stage that she is at now. If she wasn’t then she may have just a high fever now or the start of bronchitis.” He replied.
“Oh God. Is she going to be ok?” Prue said with worry.
“She should be.” I’d like to keep her here for a few days and see how she progresses. I would also suggest getting her to talk to somebody about what happened. The longer she doesn’t the harder it will be for her to recover and heal. Both physically and emotionally.”
“Ok, we will. Is there anything else? We’d like to go to her now.” Prue said with determination.
“Just that you guys seem pretty close. I heard what happened at the scene.”
Prue and Piper just looked at each other
“It will be your love in the end that will help her. Just be there for her.”
“We will Dr. Thank you.”
“Your welcome. I’ll get a nurse to show you to her room.” With that he walked out of the hospital waiting room.
They walked into Phoebe room and saw her just lying there. A breathing apparatus over her nose and mouth, to help her breath.
“Oh my god Prue she looks so tiny there.” Piper began to cry.
“Oh Piper. Here.” As Prue held out her arms. “She’s gonna be ok sweetie, we’ll help her through this.”
They broke away and went to Phoebe’s bedside. One to each side they just sat there holding her hands. Eventually they both again fell asleep. That was how Darryl, Kevin, and Donna found them hours later. “Lets let them sleep” Darryl said. “We’ll come back tomorrow.”
Phoebe stirred in her sleep and Prue woke up. “Sssssshhhhh, honey it ok, Piper and I are right here.”
“P…P…Prue?”
“Yes sweetie it’s me.”
“Wh…Where am I?”
“You’re in the hospital baby.” Prue replied quietly so not to wake Piper, as she ran her hand on the top of Phoebe’s head.
“Wh…What happened?”
“Sssshhhh, Just rest now Pheebs. We’ll talk about it later.”
Phoebe started to drift back to sleep. “I love you Prue.”
“Oh, I love you to honey, very much.”
A few days later Phoebe was feeling much better. She no longer need equipment to help her breath and her lungs were clear of any sign of the ammonia. Piper had come by to see her. As she entered Phoebes room, Phoebe was lying on her bed with her back to the door. Piper could hear her baby sister crying softly.
“Pheebs?” Piper asked quietly.
Whipping away her tears and turning over Phoebe looked at her big sister. “Hi Piper.”
“What’s wrong honey?” Piper asked. As she walked over to Phoebes bed climbed up on to it and held her baby sister.
“It’s nothing.”
“If it’s enough to make you cry it can’t be nothing.” She replied.
“It’s just…”
Piper waited. She knew she couldn’t push Phoebe, or she may never talk about it.
“When I had no memory. I wondered if there was anyone out there that loved me.” She answered barely above a whisper. “Then when I remembered everything, I wondered if you guys were looking for me. I felt so lost without you.” She continued as she started to cry again softly.
“Oh sweetie, we will always come looking for you.” Piper reassured her.
“Yeah you’re our baby girl.” Prue said from the doorway. She had come in a few minutes ago and heard Piper trying to get Phoebe to open up. She waited to see what would happen. She too, climbed up on the bed with Piper and Phoebe. Grabbing hold of Phoebe’s hand.
“I come baring good news though.”
“W.What?” Phoebe asked between her sniffles
“I just signed you release papers. You my sweet sister are free to go.”
“Ye…” She saw a look on Prue face as she was about to scream for joy. “Oh I don’t think I like that look your giving me Pwue.” She said in her best baby voice.
“That is because the only reason the Dr. is letting you go is because I promised him that you would stay in bed, for at least a couple more days.”
“Wh…”
Prue held up her hand. “No what’s about it kiddo!” She said with a stern voice. Phoebe never got to finish her protest sentence. “Now come on lets get you home.” As Piper and Prue got off the bed and helped their baby sister get dressed and ready for home.
When they arrived home Prue lifted Phoebe up with her powers and made it look like she was carrying her.
“Off to bed with you my sweet girl.”
With Piper behind them they made their way into the Manor and up to Phoebe’s room. Placing her on the bed Prue went over to her closet and pulled out phoebes favorite PJ’s
“Here you go Phoebe. Now while you change Piper and I are going to get you something to eat.”
“But I’m not hungry.” She protested.
“Well you have to take your medication and you can’t do that on an empty stomach.”
“Yes Doctor Halliwell.” Phoebe said defeated but with a smirk on her face. She remembered the comment she had said to her sisters’ Friday night, about playing Dr.’s Halliwells all weekend. I guess they are going to be anyway if not three days late.
Piper and Prue went down to make some soup for Phoebe. When they returned to her room they found her asleep on top of her covers.
“Oh Prue look at her. She’s so cute lying there.”
Prue didn’t say anything. She knew Piper was right, but was afraid that if she said anything she would let all the frustration and worry out that she had being trying to deal with over the past few days. Piper looked at her big sister and put an arm around her shoulders.
“She’s home now Prue. She’s gonna be ok.”
Prue just nodded her head, and walked to Phoebes bed. Lifting her up with her powers she pulled back the sheets and gently placed her down again, covering her up, and placing a kiss on her forehead. She then lay down beside her with her arm gently wrapped around her. Piper went over to the other side and did the same thing. The three were almost asleep when Phoebe said quietly. “I love you two.”
“Love you too Pheebs, love you too.” They both replied
And so the Halliwells were together again. One protecting the other, never breaking the circle.
The End.
