She lay on the hammock between the two large trees in the backyard as her mind wandered. This was it. The final day. One by one they had gone through the grades. Some with ease and some not. But it all led to this moment. Her mind wandered back to the beginning:

“Phoebe leave me alone. I’m trying to study for finals.”
“Come on Prue you have you the next few years to study.”
“Yeah well unlike you I care if I get through school.”

Phoebe looked back at her sister and walked out to the dining room where Prue had her books spread all over the table.

“Hey Phoebs don’t worry about it. You know what she’s like. Besides I don’t think that’s what's really bothering her.” Piper placed her arm over her younger sisters’ shoulder.
“Oh. And what's that. The cheerleaders kick her off the squad?” Phoebe shot back. She just wanted to spend some time with Prue. She was going to college next year and she knew that the little time they had now would be even else once she did.
“I have a feeling it has to do with Andy.”
“Oh. What he do now?”
“Not what he has done. It has to do what he hasn’t done.” Piper said as she sat out in the backyard. The sun beaming down on them. “He hasn’t asked her to the senior prom.”
“But they aren’t going together anymore. He doesn’t have to.”
“True. But Phoebe they’ve known each other since they were three. And they made a promise back in grade two that they would go to senior prom together no matter what.”
“Ok that was like ten years ago. How can she be mad at him for that? Hell in the second grade do you even know what prom is?”
“Probably not but she remembers.” Piper said. “Just give her some space ok?”
“Ok.” Phoebe conceded as she sat with Piper and talked about anything but Prue and Andy. But in her head Phoebe was forming a plan.

She walked down the stairs her gown flowing around her. She was excited about graduation, but without her best friend beside her it just wasn’t the same.

The bell rang as her date arrived, Joe. The star receiver for the football team. He hadn’t believed his luck when he asked her and she agreed.

“Oh he’s early. I need pictures first.”
“Grams.”
“Prue humour me. “Phoebe get the door please and let Joe know Prue is running a bit late. Prue back yard please. Beside the rose bush will be perfect.”
“Augh. Fine.” Prue said only to get it over with so she could get out of the Manor and on with the rest of the night.

Prue stood beside the rose bush as Grams took a few pictures. Then grams called after Piper and did some with her and then added Phoebe to them. Then Piper took some of Grams and Prue. Would this ever end? Prue thought to herself. She was about to call the photo session over when her eyes locked onto familiar blue ones.

“How about I take a few of the four of you?”
He took a few of the family and then grams took some of him and Prue.

“Prefect.” Grams said, “now you can go. Have fun.”

The last balloons had fallen and the streamers sagged from being up to long. But they didn’t seem to notice. All they noticed was each other.

“So I’ve been accepted to the academy.”
“Oh. I thought you were going to wait.”
“I was. But then there didn’t seem that there was anything here for me.”
“Oh.”
“But now I realize I was wrong.”

They danced a few more dances as the music quieted. Announcements were made and the music started.

“I don’t want you to go.”
“And I don’t want to. But I have to now.” He said as he wiped away her tear. “Hey we’ll always have this night.”
“And all the ones before this.”
“I’ll come back for you Prue.”
“And I’ll wait for you Andy.”

The music stopped as the lights flickered. It was over. Their senior prom was now in their past.
“I love you.” They both said as he leaned in for one last graduation kiss.

There's a time a for joy
A time for tears
A time we'll treasure through the years
We'll remember always
Graduation day

At the senior prom
We danced 'til three
And there you gave your heart to me
We'll remember always
Graduation day
Though we leave in sorrow
All the joys we've known
We can face tomorrow
Knowing we'll never walk alone
When the ivy walls
Are far behind
No matter where our paths may wind
We'll remember always
Graduation day
We'll remember always
Graduation day

“I don’t want to go.”
“Piper you are going and that’s final.”
“Prue I can’t. I don’t even have a date.”
“How cares. Piper this is the most important day in your adolescent life.
“Ado what.”
“Forget it Phoebe.” Prue shot her baby sister a look. As she turned back to Piper. “Now come on Grams got you a dress and you are going to graduation you hear me.”
“Fine but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.” Piper finally caved at her sisters’ instance. “I’ll probably be voted most likely to live with my sisters and grandmother the rest of my life.” She mumbled to herself as she looked at the dress on the hook of her door.

“Prue?”
“What?”
“Ok chill. I was just thinking about Piper and grad no need to get all mad at me.” Phoebe shot back. She had never had the best relationship with her oldest sister but she wanted Piper to be happy or her grad.
“I’m sorry Phoebs I want her to be happy to. As happy as mine was.”
“Well that won’t happen after all you and.”
“Yeah ok. So what about Piper?”
“I have an idea. Do you trust me?”
“No. But I don’t have a choice.”
“Ok so leave it to me.” Phoebe shot her a final smile that had nothing but no good on it as she got up and went out of the dining room

Piper walked down the stairs much like Prue had two years before. Prue and Phoebe both looked up at her with pride. Their sister was graduating. Not that with Piper there was any doubt. She was practically an ‘A’ student.

Grams practically dragged Piper back to the backyard to the same spot she had taken Prue two years before. The rose bush was bigger but in some ways it was still the same.

The pictures were the same. Piper alone and then with Prue. And then some with Phoebe. Then the three sister together. But as they set the camera to take some of the four of them the bell rang.

“I’ll get it.” Phoebe hollered out getting out of the next set of pictures.

They walked out the back door.

“Mind if I take that one?”

Grams turned around and almost recognized the young man before her but she wasn’t sure.
“Of course. Just a few of the four of us would be great. Thank you young man.”
“Leo. My friends call me Leo.” He said as he took the camera and snapped the final few pictures.

Prue looked over at Phoebe who seemed to be avoiding her gaze but smiled anyway.

They both knew what Phoebe had done and neither one was willing to say anything.

The music was quiet as the soft lights spun around the room. He held her in his arms wanting to never let go.

“I have to leave tomorrow.”
“Why? We’ve known each other for a short time.”
“Yeah both outcasts of the class. But I’ll be back one day Piper I promise.”
“When?”
“When the time is right. You have your sisters to see you through anything. Always remember that. And hang on to the few times that we spent together. But always remember this day.”
“I will always remember Graduation day.” Piper said as she pulled a little closer, “Now.”

Phoebe sat on her bed as the clock struck three. She didn’t think that her sister would stay out the late. After all it was graduation after all.

The knock on the door brought her out of her trance

“Phoebs?”
“Yeah.”

Prue opened he door slowly as she looked at her youngest sister.

“What did you do?”
“Nothing. Why?”
“Oh I don’t know just hunch that’s all.”
“I never did anything.” Phoebe protested as she grabbed her jacket ready to leave the Manor.
“Phoebs it’s ok. I think I know. And it was a wonderful thing.” Was all Prue said, as Phoebe left the Manor.

“Piper just hang on to the good time that we had. There will be more in the future I promise. We were meant to be together you and I. And as long as we believe that there is no stopping us.” He said as he kissed her one last time before he disappeared into the night crowd of graduates. “We can be together.”

“Oh this I pointless. Why do I even bother with this? I’ll never get it.”
“Yes you will. And if Piper and I have to stay here all night till you do. Then so be it.” Prue said as she re-opened the textbook.
“Prue it’s no use. I’m not as smart as you and Piper were.”
“Phoebe you are going to get this and you are going to graduate of it’s the last thing I do this year.” Prue insisted.

Phoebe looked at her oldest sister and knew she meant every word she said. But Phoebe didn’t know how it was to be. She was too far behind already.

She walked in the door and closed it quietly behind her. She didn’t want anyone to know she was home yet. She knew here sisters were over for dinner, after all today was her last day of classes and in two days was graduation. Taking her pack up to her room she closed her bedroom door behind her. She pulled out the envelope from her bag and sat on her bed and starred at it. She didn’t want to look. She was too scared. What if he didn’t make it? Then all her friends would be out having a great time in two days and she would be stuck home with Grams, not to mention that her boyfriend would be going dateless to Prom.

She didn’t know how long she sat there for, she didn’t even hear the door open or her sisters walk in her room.

“Well are you just going to stare at that thing or you plan on opening it?” Prue asked as she sat on the end of the bed, as Piper sat beside phoebe ready to give her any support she needed.
“I can’t.”
“Oh come on Phoebs. You know in your heart you made it so just open it.” Piper encouraged.

She sat a bit longer when suddenly Prue reached over and grabbed the envelope. “Fine I’ll do it.” She said as she started to rip open the envelope.
“Give it back I’ll do it.” Phoebe grabbed the envelope back and tore it open pulling out the paper inside.

Piper looked at Prue who had a smile on her face. She knew that her actions would get Phoebe to open it. But now they just waited as Phoebe starred down at the paper in her hand.

“Well?” the both said together.
“I. I did it.” She answered stunned. “I did IT. I GRADAUTED” she leaped of her bed and hugged Piper and then Prue. She ran out of her room and down the stairs to Grams. Yelling the whole way.

“I guess she passed.” Prue laughed.
“I guess so.” Piper laughed after her following Prue out of the room and after their baby sister.

“Wow you look. Wow.” He said as she stood at the door
“Thanks. Prue got it for me.” Phoebe answered, as she looked over at her big sister a hidden thank you behind her smile

Grams had taken all the pictures as she had for Prue and Piper. And now they were off for the Prom. She knew that Phoebe would be out all night as Prue had been. And even Piper. But she wasn’t worried. They were responsible. Even with Phoebes antics she still knew right from wrong.

“So now what. We leave behind our high school years for what?”
“I’m off to Berkley in the fall.”
“So one set of halls for another.”
“You could come with me. Leave all this and your sisters behind you.”
“No. I don’t know what I want yet. And besides I have to look out for Grams.”
“Phoebe.”
“Hey she watched out for me all these years. Now it’s my turn.”
“True. And what a job that was.”
“Hey.” She smacked him playfully as they watched the sun rise above the Golden Gate Bridge. “Another day.” Phoebe said quietly
“Yup and a free one for us at that.” he said pulling her close to him as they sat in silence as the glow started to shine on the city.

She had raised them well. Now they would go into the world ready to carve their own paths. But one day they would discover another path that they were all destined for. But not today. Today they would celebrate Graduation. For even though it wasn’t theirs they would all remember that one special day in their lives.

I dedicate this to all the Grads out there. May it be memorable and safe. ConGRADulation.
