A little one is Born
Halliwell's Episology (Year 0)
That year, November, nearing the end of autumn. I remembered that day, mummy suddenly felt so sick and she said her tummy hurts. Grams told us to stay in the living room, me with Piper, she was only 3 years old then, her big eyes so innocent, told me that she had no idea what's gonna happen to our mummy, only that she was sick and she has to stay very quiet and play very softly. Actually, I don't really know why mummy has to go upstairs to her room either. Grams said she's gonna have a baby soon and we can't get to the hospital in time, then why can't she sit with Piper and me, talk and play with us until the baby decided to come out?
We were having Grams special when mummy told her that she's coming? I asked who's coming and Grams said the new baby, Piper and my baby sister, Phoebe. I think that's what mummy wanted to call her. I looked at mummy as she rubbed her big tummy. For a many times, mummy has been trying to tell Piper and me how come the baby was in her tummy, has to be in her tummy, wanted to grow inside her tummy, loves to kick and turn in her tummy and for so long I watched as her tummy became bigger, I have always ask the same question, "How is the baby girl going to come out mummy?" She would always smile so sweetly telling me, "You will see honey, you will see." Even though most of what she told me, I understood close to zero of everything, but I always listen in awe and ask with a little mind of question marks.
Not to mention Piper, she seemed to be more interested in the choo-choo train that she pulled along with her wherever she went. She always listened with mouth open when mummy talks about the new baby, then she would placed her small hand lightly on it afraid that she might disturb the baby inside making it cry. I remembered at times when I made too much noise in my play, Piper would come hushing me in her little finger, then another pointing at mummy's direction whispering so softly to me, "Don't play so loud, baby is sleeping." Mummy would laugh at Piper's cuteness and serious look and although I was confused, I played along cause mummy's laughter was always influencing.
I have no idea how long Grams and mummy were upstairs, since the whole time, I was too engrossed playing with a sleepy Piper downstairs. It wasn't all the time when both of us could stay up that late, usually mummy would tell us bedtime stories by 9. Just as I happened to glance at the clock, the two hands were pointing close to the number 12, mummy has been trying to teach me how to read time and I was doing my part when Grams yelled for me from upstairs. Going to the stairways, I looked up but didn't see anyone. Piper had followed me and was tucking at my shirt.
"What?" I was annoyed.
"Grams calling you." Piper's tiny voice sounded small.
"I heard her."
"Why are we standing here?"
"Because Grams said to stay here no matter what happens."
"But Grams calling."
"She didn't say I have to go up."
(Somewhere upstairs)
"PRUDENCE! GET UP HERE!! I NEED YOUR HELP!!!" hollered Penny from above.
(Both little girls looked up with wide eyes.)
"Grams says go up."
"I know, I heard that too. Grams does talk very loud you know that."
I started up the stairs holding my 3 years old sisters hand. We went up the usual way, not expecting any unusual business from Grams, except that maybe it was time for bed.
"PRUE?!! ARE YOU HERE ALREADY?!! I'M IN YOUR MUMMY'S ROOM!!!" hollered Penny again.
"I'm coming Grams, I'm coming. Yell at Piper, she's the one walking so slow." I protested.
With that, Piper skipped a few steps trying to keep in pace with me. Finally, we reached the doorway, we saw Grams kneeling on mummy's bed back facing us, and mummy was in front of her though Grams blocked most of her.
"Its ok Patty, it ok. I got her, I got her. PRUDENCE!!!!!" Grams went off again.
"What? I wasn't annoyed at Grams, more like I was curious what seemed to be the ru...hought mummy's gonna have a baby but I don't see anyone else beside them. Grams turned her head sideway looking at me.
"Prue honey, please get the towel from the bathroom for me, hurry!"
"Why?" I enquired, as usual.
"Just get it for Grams! Hurry up!!" She yelled again.
"Ok." I headed to the bathroom not far away, got the towel and went back to mummy's room. I saw Piper standing there still staring at whatever scene was displayed before her.
"Grams, I got the towel."
"Come here quick!"
Holding the towel in my hands, I strolled to Grams side. But guess what I saw that made me stopped in my tracks? Not to mention Piper who was walking right behind bumped into me. Grams was holding this, this bloody and messy baby in her hands. She passed it to mummy who looked real messy too herself and Grams reached out for the towel in my hands. While she quickly wrapped it around the baby, me and Piper just stood there memorized by the first sight of our baby sister. Mummy was already smiling so lovingly and coaxing the baby in her arms.
"Mum, she's so beautiful." Mummy said.
"She is honey, she sure is a darling." Penny tucked the towel nicely around her youngest grandchild.
"What's the time now?" Suddenly, mummy sounded scare and looked at Grams fearfully.
Grams glanced at the alarm clock on the side table.
"Past 12, she was born at exactly 12.01, such a tense hour."
After that, everything went silent, mummy staring at Grams, and then back at the baby in her arms. I was still trying to comprehend the changes before me and I guessed Piper too since we have no idea what they were saying. Anyway, we shouldn't have care that much at that age right? Suddenly, the silent was pierced by a loud cry, the cry of the newly born sister.
"Shhh, shhhh, mummy's here, don't be scare, mummy's here, my little one."
Mummy was rocking the baby in her arms.
"She wants to be feed." Grams said.
Mummy took heed of Grams suggestion, she unbuttoned her shirt and as gently as she could, she had the baby hushed soon nursing the milk in her mouth.
"Look mum, she's really hungry."
"Yes she is Patty, she's a hungry one." Grams smiled and stroked lightly on the baby's face.
Piper and I were still root to the ground, watching everything. Later, I was to find out that Piper has also pulled along her choo-choo train.
"Mum? Do you think its over? Is she safe now?"
"I dunno honey, I dunno. For the moment, probably yes, since its been 10 minutes. If anyone will to take her, they should have made their presence known already, right?"
"Maybe, but I'm not letting down my guards, not now or ever."
"I'm not asking you to do that, you think I will?"
Finally, mummy looked up and saw us.
"Hey, come here my two little sweeties. come and take a look at your baby sister."
Obediently, I walked forward dragging Piper along, made that she's dragging herself along since she was the one clinging tight to my shirt.
"The two of you stay here with mummy and help look after your baby sister. Grams going downstairs to call an ambulance ok?"
We nodded simultaneously.
As Grams left the room, I reached out and touched the one in mummy's arms, hungrily sucking to her milk's content.
"She's Phoebe, your baby sister, look, she's so small and a beautiful thing like the both of you."
"She's dirty." That's all Piper seemed to mind.
Mummy chuckled a little and flashed her loving smile.
"She won't after we clean her up later, so do you love her?"
Piper nodded her head innocently. I took an extra hard look at the eyes closed baby again. By then, she had somehow closed in her tiny fingers around my little finger, real tight and she looked so pinkish.
"Prudence? Do you love baby Phoebe?"
I looked at mummy and I gave her my most sincere answer, "Yes mummy, I love Phoebe, she is so cute."
Mummy's face lit up almost immediately and with one free hand, she enveloped Piper and I in one nice warm hug, with baby Phoebe still sucking away. Before long, Piper has also forgotten her shyness earlier and began stroking and touching the new one. She still seemed to mind the mess on her fingers though.
What I would never forget during that moment was, mummy actually let me carried baby Phoebe while waiting for the ambulance. She doesn’t seem that heavy and with Grams help, I actually was looking down on the little thing in my arms. She seemed very satisfied with a full stomach and was so tired that she yawned so big.
"Look mummy! Phoebe's yawning!" Piper was excited and pointing a finger at her newborn sister.
"Yes honey, Phoebe's tired." Mummy smiled.
Funnily, the little one in my arms seemed not to agree with mummy, for she opened her eyes.
"Mummy, mummy! She's got brown eyes like Piper!" I was really thrilled, cause little Phoebe seemed to be only looking at me.
"I see! I see! I want to see! Let me see!" Piper squealed excitingly.
"Here sweetie, stand here and you can see." Grams managed to coax Piper's eagerness down.
But somehow, she was too slow in response and by the time she got into a good position, baby Phoebe closed her eyes and yawned again.
"I did not see! I did not see baby's brown eyes like me!" Pouted Piper.
"Its ok honey, Phoebe is tired, she needs her sleep. She will open her eyes for you later, ok?" Mummy coaxed too.
"Ok." Piper sulked. She didn't seem happy to miss what I saw. Down in my heart, I felt myself glowing with pride, at the gift of a beautiful sister. I felt lady luck showering on me, since I got to look into her eyes so soon, so close. I felt important, since I was the one carrying her at that time and I knew I have to protect and love her at all costs. Only for one simple reason, little Phoebe is my baby sister. She stays so close to my heart and I'll never want to forget that moment.

23 years later. At Halliwell's manor, past the midnight hour. Someone was shaking me, and I heard my name being called several times. I recognized that voice, I opened my eyes to welcome the pitch dark and instinctively, I took a quick glance at the clock beside my bed. The numbers reflected 2:03am. I switched on the table lamp and an orange light chased away some of the darkness. I felt the side of my bed sank in as the one climbed onto it. Turning to look at her, I realized that she has snuggled beneath the covers ready to sleep there without asking whether she could. I moved closer to her, saw her rubbing her eyes and I pulled her hand away gently.
"What's wrong honey? Heater malfunctioning?"
"No." Her tired answer.
"Bad dream?"
"No."
I have to think towards the bad side. "A premonition?"
"No." Her voice sounded distant.
At least we were demons and warlocks free for the night. But she had me worrying then. I felt around her forehead, normal.
"Are you feeling sick or something?"
"No."
I heaved a sign of relief, or puzzlement.
"Then what's wrong baby? Why aren't you sleeping in your own room?"
Hearing that, she turned over and looked straight into my eyes. Her soft brown eyes showed me much the same as 23 years before.
"Prue? I just want to sleep here tonight. Can I?"
Looking down, I managed a smile and I leaned in to plant a kiss on her forehead.
"Of course you can honey, anytime you want, anytime you feel like it and anytime the door is open for you."
She smiled back at me. Oh I simply love that beautiful smile, so much like mum's. Without a word, she snuggled closer to me and I turned off the light, pulled the covers over us and cuddled close to her for warmth and comfort. Nothing changed, she is still my baby sister after all. 23 years before and 23 years later, and who cares however many 23 years later, our feelings will never change, memories will forever tight locked.
