Piper and Phoebe were watching Regis and Kelly when the Breaking News Story came on.
“Today the entire united states was attacked by terrorists. People have lost jobs.” A guy says as a picture of the trade towers being hit.
“Oh crap!” Phoebe said staring at the TV stunned.
Piper was doing the same, and then the phone rang.
“Are you watching the news?” A voice asked.
“Yes. Who is this?” Piper asked.
“It’s Marsha. My boyfriend has to go to NY soon and I can’t work at P3 tonight.” The voice replied.
“Well I’m going to be closing P3 for a while. Nobody will feel like dancing or anything.” Piper said.
“Ok. However, I will be in when you re-open.” Marsha said.
“Ok. That’s good.” Piper said.
“More news. Sources think this to be the work of Bin Laden.” The news guy said.
“Piper! You better get in here!” Phoebe called from the living room.
Later that day Phoebe got a phone call from New York.
“Hello?” Piper asked.
“This is a friend of Phoebe’s from New York. Is Phoebe in?” A girl’s voice asked.
“Yes she is. Hang on.” Piper said before covering the mouthpiece, “Pheebs, phone call!”
“Coming!” Phoebe said.
“She’ll be right here soon.” Piper said.
“Thanks.” The girl said.
“Here she is.” Piper said before handing the phone to Phoebe.
“Hey Phoebe. It’s Melanie.” The girl said.
“Hey, Mel. What’s up?” Phoebe asked.
“Marissa works in the south tower. She was there when it went down.” Melanie replied.

“Yes. Yes. Of course. Yah. Thank you.” Piper said.
“Piper! Our flight leaves in five minutes if it leaves on time!” Phoebe called to her older sister.
Piper came rushing down the stairs as fast as she could, being three months pregnant.
“What I can’t believe is that Dr. Camden is letting me fly to New York three months pregnant, I mean come on!” Piper exclaimed.
“Yah well maybe Dr. Camden believes you’ll take it easy while we’re gone.” Paige said.
“Yah right! That’s not possible even when we’re here!” Piper said.
“True. Lets just get going.” Phoebe said.
The three sisters left the Manor and drove to the airport. While they drove to the airport, they listened to the radio and talked. Once at the airport, they waited about five minutes before their flight was called.

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Working in some stage in LA
Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry

**Flashback**

“Piper, come here!” Phoebe called to her sister.
“What?” Piper asked walking into the living room.
“Look.” Phoebe said pointing to the TV screen.
The two sisters sat there watching CNN tremendously stunned. After awhile they called their dad on his business trip.
“Hey, Dad.” Piper said.
“Hey, Piper. Watched the news yet today?” Victor asked.
“Yah and so has Pheebs.” Piper replied.
That day went on unlike any other day. Until the phone call from New York for Phoebe about her friend.
“Phoebe, I got bad news for you.” A girl said.
“What, Mel?” Phoebe asked.
“Marissa may be dead.” Melanie replied.

**End Flashback**

Once in the plane, Phoebe pressed play on her portable CD player and listened to the Allan Jackson song that was in there. And once it came to Where Were You Phoebe silently cried.

Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who didn’t know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below

Phoebe listened to that song all the way to New York for the anniversary of 09-11 and Marissa’s death. Phoebe and her sisters were staying with Melanie and her family for the three weeks they would be there. Once Phoebe walked into Melanie’s house memories of last September 11 plagued her.

**Flashback**

“Who was on the phone, Pheebs?” Piper asked.
“It was Melanie. Marissa may be dead. She works in the WTC tower 1.” Phoebe replied before breaking down.

**End Flashback**

Did you burst out in pride
For the red white and blue
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters

“Phoebe! You’re here!” Melanie said walking up to Phoebe and her sisters.
“Yah. This is Piper and Paige. This is Melanie.” Phoebe said.
Melanie and Phoebe talked some more before dinner was ready.
“You know the gang can’t wait to see you.” Melanie said once Piper and Paige had left the dinning room after dinner.
“Yah well I’ve changed over the last few years.” Phoebe said.
“So have we all. Everyone took Marissa’s death really hard. Marcy and her fiancée still are not totally over everything that happened last year.” Melanie said.
“Yah. A lot happed.” Phoebe said.
“So you said in a letter that you had gotten married.” Melanie said.
“Yah.” Phoebe said.
“So why isn’t he here?” Melanie asked.
“Actually I don’t really want to talk about it.” Phoebe replied.
“Ok. I will leave it alone. Did you know that Clay had asked Marissa to marry him two weeks before she died?” Melanie asked.
“No I did not.” Phoebe replied.
“Oh well Marissa had said yes and Clay still isn’t really over her.” Melanie said.

I’m just a singer of simple songs
I’m not a real political man
I watch CNN but I’m not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

Melanie and Phoebe caught up and went to join Piper and Paige in the living room. Melanie had just turned the CD player on when the phone rang.
“Hello? Yah. Umm… yah. Yes. Bye.” Melanie said before hanging up the phone.
“Who was that?” Phoebe asked.
“Oh just Mike. Saying he was going to be late.” Melanie replied.
“Who’s Mike?” Paige asked.
“My brother.” Melanie replied.
“So how’s he dealing with all that is happening and that has happened?” Phoebe asked.
“Better than a lot of people. He also worked in the WTC tower 1. But he hadn’t left for work yet by the time it collapsed.” Melanie replied.

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty case you’re a survivor
In a crowed room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close open your eyes and not go to sleep
Did you notice the sunset for the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn of that violent old movie you’re watching
And turn on “I Love Lucy” reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay at home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love

Melanie talked with Phoebe and her sisters for an hour before all headed off to bed. Before totally falling asleep, Phoebe wrote in her Journal, something she had started the year before.

Dear Journal,

Today Piper, Paige and I flew to New York. The song that really makes me cry is Where Were You by Allan Jackson. The words are so sad! Anyway, I am now in one of the guest rooms at Melanie’s house. I have not seen Mike (her brother) yet but I might see her tomorrow.

Pheebs

“Hey, Phoebe.” Mike said the next day.
“Hey, Mike. How are you?” Phoebe asked.
“As good as a person can be today.” Mike replied.
“That’s true.” Phoebe agreed.
Mike and Phoebe were still talking when Melanie walked into the living room.

Later that day they went to a rembrance service for people who died in the attacks. When they said Marissa’s name Phoebe, Melanie and Mike cried. Piper and Paige just comforted their sister.

The greatest is love
The greatest is love

Well at least I still have my sisters. Phoebe thought as they all walked up to Marissa’s grave.
After awhile everyone else left Phoebe by her self with only Marissa’s grave as company.
“Marissa, I’m sorry how I reacted when I left New York all those years ago. I knew then that I may never have seen you again and I was right. I will never see you again. A lot has changed in my life since then. You know you are the best friend I have ever had. Even in high school, I did not have as good friends as you were to me almost the whole time I lived here.” Phoebe said.
Phoebe talked to Marissa’s grave for two hours before heading back to the rest of the group. Halfway there she almost literally walked into Clay.
“Hey, Phoebe.” Clay said.
“Oh Hey, Clay. Sorry about almost walking into you.” Phoebe said.
“Just so you know, Marissa forgave you a long time ago for how you acted when you left. So did everybody else.” Clay said.
“Thanks but that doesn’t help.” Phoebe said.
“I didn’t really think it would but it was worth a try.” Clay said.
