I stood there, calm yet my mind was racing. There he was, my handsome boy. He stayed in his crib; the only movement was from him breathing, in and out. If he only knew what had just happened, why I was the only one there. I stood there until I saw those lovely green eyes of his. They were his fathers. Leo. Why wasn’t he beside me anymore? Why was I alone? He started to stretch and rolled over to face me. His face told me it all, it would be okay. I smiled at him and tickled his little tummy and he smiled back. He looked at me and I was so proud to be his mother. That little boy, he was such a gift. But, hadn’t Leo told me that a million times? He did, I remembered. He had, but then why wasn’t he telling me it again now? My son laughed as I continued to tickle him. I picked him up and took him downstairs for a bottle. My sister’s were down there to. Phoebe was rushing to get to work on time and Paige was yawning and staring into the refrigerator. She got something out and left the room.
“Piper, have you seen my keys?” Phoebe asked. I laughed at how different my sisters were. Paige was laid back and never in much of a rush and Phoebe was constantly on the go.
“No, have you looked where you usually keep your keys?” I asked. Phoebe was a little scatterbrained but I love her anyway. She looked at the board where we keep our keys and sure enough, they were hanging there. She turned back and shot me a joking glare. I gave a little laugh and as she snatched her keys, I got Wyatt a bottle. I heard the door slam and Wyatt started to cry. It had scared him just like any other morning. And, like any other morning, Phoebe opened the door again.
“Sorry!” she shouted. She closed the door calmly and I gave Wyatt his bottle. It seemed like any other morning but only I knew the truth. It wasn’t. None of them knew about what happened the night before; the night Leo left me to become an Elder. We had become goddesses and faced the titans and then we won. While my sisters slept, Leo came to tell me that he had to leave; he was becoming an Elder because of what he’d done. What about his son? Our son? He was our whitelighter, and my husband and Wyatt’s father and a brother to my sisters and a friend to everyone he’d ever known. How could he leave just like that? I sat there for a while; looking at the one memory I had of him, our son.
A few hours later, Wyatt was down from his nap. ‘It’s now or never.’ I thought. “Leo! Leo get down here, I know you can still orb!” I shouted to the empty room. Paige had gone out, thankfully. He didn’t come. I waited and for the first time, he didn’t come. “Well I know you can hear me so you just listen!” I continued. “Leo, you have a son down here! You have a wife! You have friends and you are our whitelighter! We don’t want this Chris guy to take over! You saw how he couldn’t help us last time! Why are you punishing him? Our son Leo!” I paused. I know it hadn’t made a lot of sense but I had gotten my point across. I kept going, a little calmer. “Please, just come back and hold him, tell him good-bye, tell all of us good-bye. Please Leo, please, come home.” I begged. I saw the orbs and stood up, sure to see Leo. But, it wasn’t him. “Chris, you cannot just come into my bedroom, I told you that yesterday.” I told him angrily.
“Sorry,” he replied.
“Where is Leo?” I asked, as irritated as ever.
“He can’t come right now.” He rolled his eyes and orbed away. A tear strolled down my cheek as I flopped back on my bed.
A few minutes later, I found myself in sleep. I was floating in the fluffy clouds and Leo was standing there, the same smile on his face as he had on our wedding day. The same sparkle in his eyes as they had held when our son was born. I smiled at just the sight of him and ran toward him. I gifted him with a hug and thankfully, I received one as well. When I pulled away to look in his eyes, they had changed. Now, they were wise but still wonderful.
“Piper,” he began. I loved the voice he used. “I’ll never, ever stop loving you and you know that. I know you do. Forever, you will be my wife and Wyatt will be my son. More than anything, I want to be with the two of you but I can’t. There is one way.” He paused and I clung to his every way. There was a way! “Keep me in your heart, in your memories. Treasure them like I treasure you and I’ll always be by your side. I’ll never leave and I’ll be there for Wyatt too. Memories may not be happening this instant but bring them to you and though the actions will not come, the feelings will. I love you.”
And then, I was awake but I felt so different. So calm. Reassured. He had given me strength to dream, to be a mother, to be a sister, to live.
